Bio
FEMALE MUSICIANS FIGHTING BREAST CANCER BENEFIT (Buffalo, NY) It‘s been 7 consecutive years, since Ida Goeckel, a local female musician and breast cancer survivor, founded and organized the annual Female Musicians Fighting Breast Cancer benefit. The 8th of these annual fundraising events is once again set to raise awareness and funds for Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Breast Care Center and Resource Center. The event is to be held during Breast Cancer Awareness month, on Sunday, October 17th, 2010, at Macaroon’s Nite Club (576 Dick Rd., Depew, N.Y.) Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. with four area bands, featuring female members, donating their talent to perform starting at 2:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. This year’s performances will be some of the finest mix of musicians WNY area has to offer in each respective musical genre. They are: The acoustic stylings of Ms. Tara Graves, the southern flavor of Whiskey River, one of WNY'S best electic country/rock bands, Naughty Dawg, and the soulful songtress, Ms. Caitlin Koch, as the headliner. Prizes generously donated by local and national merchants will be raffled off throughout the show, and 50/50 splits will be run twice throughout the show. There will be silent auctions as well. Admission to the benefit to witness all this talent under one roof will be just $10.00. This unique fundraiser, sanctioned by the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation and Team Cure, donates 100% of the proceeds to Roswell Park’s Breast Care Clinic and Resource Center located at Elm and Carlton St. in Buffalo, N.Y. The mission of this benefit is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of breast cancer patients, as well as enhancing breast cancer awareness in the community. The center provides patients with resources, research information, and treatment options related to breast cancer. In 2003, the program expanded its efforts to St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. Statistics now indicate that the older you get, the greater your risk for developing breast cancer. Chances increase from 1 in 233 for women up through their 30's to 1 in 8 up through age 85+. A smaller number of men are at risk as well. It is also the fifth leading cause of death in US women ( heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respitory disease exceed breast cancer). Approximately 40,000 women die each year from breast cancer. Many strides and advances have been made in both the early detection and subsequent treatment for breast cancer patients. Continued studies and research, just within the last 10-12 years, have greatly reduced the risk of recurrence and have given thousands of women and men diagnosed with breast cancer new hope for a bright future. New studies have also dispelled common myths or have had inconclusive cause and effect results. An example is the link between caffiene and breast cancer. To date, there is no evidence of such a link. With greater concentration on pinpointing its cause and developing a cure, perhaps the next generation will no longer needlessly have to be concerned about the risk of breast cancer. In the meantime, it is important that those who have diagnosed receive the compassionate care and treatment that Roswell has to offer at its Breast Care Clinic, as well as arm themselves with the available up-to-date information at Roswell‘s Resource Center. The entire community is invited to support this worthy cause. Founder and Organizer-Ida Goeckel, Coordinator- Margaret Freiert, Coordinator(2003-2005) -the late and great Neil Kelleher-August 8, 1959-Feb. 26, 2006. Ida Goeckel is a local bass player and DCIS breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2003. During her ordeal, she was given a second chance, hope, and compassionate care at the nation's first comprehensive cancer center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, in Buffalo, N.Y. Since that time, she remains cancer free and devoted to showing her gratitude by coordinating the only Western N.Y. music benefit to help raise funds for the Roswell Breast Care Center and Resource Center. Her primary mission is to make sure that other cancer patients and their families receive the same quality care that she did. It is also to develop a sisterhood/brotherhood among all breast cancer survivors and supporters. Her secondary goal is to showcase talented local female musicians and use their music as the universal language to bring supporters of this cause together. -
