It’s the commitment, the dichotomy, that best describe the Graz band ‚The Base’. Lipstick-red lips, biting tough, raw flesh. The foundation is an uncompromising tightrope walk in the battlefields of rock, avoiding cliche with a cold female elegance and accompanied by sweaty guitar riffs with a masculine force that put a spell even on the skeptic.
The new album ‚16 Songs In Self Defense’ is an homage to dichotomy, celebrated by a mature trio consisting of Norbert Wally (guitar/vocals), Albrecht Klinger (guitar/bass/vocals) and Karlheinz Miklin Jr. (drums/vocals). Their influences are widespread, having been touched by Velvet Underground and the Pixies, hectic Slavic breaks, melodies a la Lambchop and R.E.M style choruses.
The Base project a dark film inside the listeners head, flickering images of charm and smoke, booze and the last great love. Yet the listener is director with all power in the interpretation. The instruments are given enough space to create an organic listening experience, a true jam-session feel.
‚I Went To The Bathroom To Cry’ is one of these songs. Norbert Wally provides vocals, his unmistakable hoarse voice echoing with melancholy and resignation. Yet the gloom is not oppressive, more a gentle touch on the back. ‚The Base’ demonstrate their high international level with ‘Dirty Little Hole’ just as easily as with ‘Wearing The Tits’ or ‘Sugar Free Baby’, which continues the trio’s ballad tradition.
But Austria’s greatest small band takes a step further: the mind-blowing intro shows guts, the same that manifest in the unconventionally arranged ‘55 Days’, a paean to experimentation. ‘Did Dr. What’s-Her-Name Raise Your Dosage?’ is six minutes of versatile songwriting, a high that will not be forgotten any time soon by Austria’s alternative scene. Dry riffs pair up with 60’s chorus, magnificent solos and a chill down your spine.
Five years have passed since the release of her rocky debut album "thousand miles away". In these years Coshiva was able to discover her own voice, becoming a sensitive Singer/Songwriter. Her new album "Butterfly" is completely self-produced. Characterized through all the live-experiences (with band or solo), she has been able to recreate this unplugged feeling and bring it into the studio. This is why you find solo songs as well as songs with her band. The emphasis of the sparkling songs are centered on the rich and clear voice of Coshiva. No longer overpowered by the music itself, the voice has been given the room to evolve. Accompanied by her piano, an acoustic guitar, double bass and a small jazz drumset Coshiva serves pearls of musical delectabilities.

The singer-songwriter and piano player Martin Klein has progressed from being an insider-tip to a small institution, since he has been playing a support show for the Swedish rock band Eskobar just with an old keyboard and his powerful voice. Endlessly inventive, no two plays of him ever seem quite the same. From broken rhythms to beautiful piano chords he has carved out a sophisticated niche of his very own. Martin Klein has a natural gift to tell a story through his music and his spectrum of vocal ability amazes. Martin Klein played already creazy solo concerts in London, Frankfurt, Utrecht, Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz. His tunes DON'T LET IT GET YOU DOWN and ON MY WAY TO YOU have got airplay on alternative radio stations in Austria, Swizerland and Germany. In november 2008 Martin Klein released his first record (SONGS FOR MY PIANO). Check out this Vienna based artist.
