This self-titled four track EP is an interesting departure from the usual dance-inspired music that is usually rolled out for our delectation by a money-grabbing industry that thinks it's giving us what it thinks we want or should be listening to. Folie Ordinaire is an interesting mix of 80s keyboards via Giorgio Moroder and rock guitar (Excited), Mark E. Smithesque vocals (Victims), moody bassline (Sing It Loud), choppy guitar (Little Boy). Standout track, Little Boy is a an example of what good 80s music was before Stock, Aitken & Waterman sabotaged the Top 40 with their electronic dirge which was supposedly meant to pass as pop music. The song begins with a drum machine, funky bass, choppy guitar (circa Tom Tom Club's 80s hit Wordy Rappinghood), Moroderesque synths that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to 80s hit film The Breakfast Club. First song, Excited, is an interesting mix of disco beats, rock guitar, quirky synths (circa 70s quirky New Wavers, Sparks), whilst Victims, resonates with military drumming (reminiscent of U2's drummer, Larry Mullen from the band's earlier career on albums: Boy, October and War), Hazel O' Connor (80s singer/songwriter/star of Breaking Glass –album and film) and Mark E.Smith vocal styling, and Visage's Fade to Grey synths. The heavy duty bassline at the start of final song, Sing It Loud's is pure ESG's Feeling Moody; a definite whiff of nostalgia to those of us who still has a dance-floor whirling around in our heads -complete with disco ball! Folie Ordinaire are definitely going places, and if this four-track EP is anything to go by they'll be launching into orbit sometime soon: albeit a Disco/80s New Wave one.
