Influences
We strongly admire independent musicians, especially women, who creatively and boldly redefine success in this industry as not necessarily having anything to do with major labels, mass-media, and the lowest common denominator.

After nearly ten years of performing as Folk By Association, Karen Krajacic and Jill Cowen have certainly traveled a long and interesting road together. The early years of developing their sound locally were followed by several years of steady touring in support of their 2003 and 2006 CD releases. They've now played hundreds of shows in 26 states, gaining a reputation for both their top-notch vocal harmonies and their grassroots approach to working as independent artists.
With intricate harmonies at the forefront, Folk By Association embraces elements of folk, roots, bluegrass, jazz, and world music, weaving these eclectic traditions together in a unique, contemporary way. The duo uses multiple acoustic instruments, switching off between the guitar and mandolin, throwing in a banjo here, a toy xylophone there. Said to be both nostalgic and modern, soothing and energizing, Folk By Association is both a throwback and a surprise.
2010 finds the duo in the planning stages of a third CD, extensively touring throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, organizing an acoustic series and folk festival, and making their respective homes in VT (Karen) and NJ (Jill).
PRESS:
“Two gems in the American music scene for sure!” – Mary Palmer, DJ/Host, High Plains Public Radio
"Their lyrics are organic and spiritual, reminding listeners of the larger things in life- the earth, hope, risk- and of universal human experiences, like breaking up, the joys and pitfalls of traveling, and self-analyzation... folk at its purest." Jaymi Heimbuch, Girlistic Magazine, Spring 2007
"As is the case with their live performances, the duo’s harmonies on "As We Travel" are impeccable, two soaring voices sounding as if they were plucked from the highest mountain range." -S.J. Dibai, music journalist, One Note Ahead
"These girls have certainly got the goods! They should be headlining folk concerts until the end of days. Beautiful, honest talent!"
"Fabulous harmonies with wonderful musical interplay. An acoustic delight!"- Acoustic Harmony, WGDR
"There's something visible between them as they play. It's as if, while each song lasts, they're telling each other's story. In the music, each note sounds better accompanied, each harmony richer with it's complement, each word more honest with a supporting vocal."
-Cynthia Koons, The Messenger Press
"Brilliantly tight vocals and instrumentation. It was the highlight of my day. Listening to them brought me back to the Folk scene in the coffee houses of the nineteen seventies. I would highly recommend catching their performance when they are in your area."
-Ed Saultz- Liscune
"The songs on "As We Travel" have a natural "live" feel, with the guest musicians -- bassist Jim Cowen, Jon Thompson on sax and flute and percussionists Kim Leary and Dave Merritt -- occasionally adding the lightest of embellishments. Otherwise, there's no question (As We Travel) is a Folk by Association record. "
-Patrick O'Shea, The Trenton Times
"The CD is excellent but "Letter To Myself" is more than another folk number- ala Joni Mitchell School of Jazz-Folk Fusion."
-Ralph Drake, DJ WDVR and Homegrownradionj.com
"'Mind's Eye' (is) an impressively haunting, poetic masterpiece..." - S.J. Dibai, music journalist, One Note Ahead
"'Mind's Eye' is a beautifully sung folky gem!"
"These ladies have something beyond just an ordinary gift... truly inspiring and mood-altering."
-Kyle-Glenn McLaughlin, Owner, Arianna Miles
"Their haunting harmonies and skillful guitar playing will leave you entranced."

Bringing awareness to peace and diversity is one of my favorite passions in this world. Another cause I strongly support is keeping the world clean for generations to come. If everyone worked at being a little greener everyday than the earth would have a chance to become cleaner!
Sonicbids is an Artist and Promoters Worst Nightmare
Recently we began a trial usage of Sonicbids service for our artist and band searches.
As a result of that test it became clear that Sonicbids is all about earning money at the expense of artists looking to break through the wall that surrounds the music industry.
Based on our experiences from both the perspective of artists we are associated with seeking to benefit from opportunities offered though Sonicbids. As well as from the perspective of promoters searching for talent through Sonicbids service.
We have concluded that Sonicbids operation is nothing more than another one of these money making SCAMS that is generating as much as $8,000,000.00 a year for Sonicbids at the expense of artists and bands paying subscription fees on top of submission fees to be considered by promoters utilizing Sonicbids services. Of which many of these Promoters are running nothing but a SCAM on artists or bands that apply.
First, you should be aware of where the money goes. For every dollar an Artist or Band pays for Sonicbids’ subscription fees, it goes directly into Sonicbids pockets. Second, the first $100.00 of every listing by a promoter, as well as 50% of all fees you pay for any listing also goes directly into the pockets of Sonicbids. This means that Sonicbids is, by our estimation, pocketing over 75% of all monies collect from unsuspecting artists and bands.
We also believe that for every band that pursues any individual opportunity at least 50 artists or bands have applied for it, and in some cases 1,000’s of artist or bands. And in many instances after paying the fees and being selected the artist or band finds out they have to pay additional fees to be included, or they will receive a notice from the promoter telling them that even if they weren’t selected, if they want to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars they can still be included in the opportunity.
'Nation of the Free' by The Andy Smythe Band currently for sale on itunes, amazon and hmv.com. Currently featured in the top 10 in the rock section. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/nation-of-the-free/id346303564
We are seeking both male and female artists with strong and unique vocal ability, talent, and style. An artist must stand out above the crowd, have a great voice, and be available to record and tour full time.
Any artist selected will be contracted for a 52 weeks period prior to the commencement of the tour at a rate of between $650.00 and $1,200.00 per week that shall be based on their talent and potential. All travel expenses shall be provided for in addition to the weekly salary if an artist is selected.
Artist must be available to travel and perform a maximum of 7 shows per week that will consist of sets between 45 and 90 minutes in length. In some instances there will be two shows scheduled on the same day. Artist must also make themselves available for any and all rehearsals, studio recordings, promotional appearances, and photo or video shoots as part of this agreement.
Follow This Link If You Are Interested In This Opportunity:

Well, last year we shot artists from hard core drum & bass to folks finest, we already have a number booked for this year but we need a few more..... So as we are looking to expand our music portfolio, we are going to do a number of free shoots including full art direction and all post production All you would need to cover would be any travel costs if you want us to get off our backsides and come to you, and any expenses if you wanted props etc, plus a minor fee for each image chosen for disc and usage fees that will cover full usage for all media & territories So for the first 20 bands or solo artists to call we can work out a date and best location & organise the shoot (this being the first 20 to get in touch, so if you are off touring azerbaijan for the next couple of months you can still book a slot by getting in touch now) Either give us a call us on 07852 132 386, or email at whitewheel@sky.com Don’t care if you are still trying to make it or already successful, you just need to be passionate about your music So if you need to refresh your press & PR imagery, need to do some print material or just fancy having a laugh doing a shoot that could cost you nothing other than a bit of time, or if you know someone that does, give us a shout... All the best, Ian & Fran www.whitewheelphotography.co.uk
