About 't Ey

Musicclub ' t Ey goes back a long way to 1991, when its predecessor, 't Eynde (the End) was started. Up to 2000, when its location at the Eindestraat had to be abandoned, the non-profit organisation (the Flemish vzw) set up hundreds of concerts and other cultural activities. Many of those were folk-gigs and the club would later profile itself as predominantly folk. But many other popular acts like Raymond vh Groenewoud, Philip Catherine, Willem Vermandere and Wannes vd Velde were staged too. So artists from all over the world made their appearance in what used to be the farm's cowshed, miraculously made over into a small concert hall. The public also enjoyed a number of purely ethnic music bands on their stage. And yet, this typical brown café or pub had to go too and a modern bloc of flats has since risen in its stead. It was Wannes vd Velde , the renowned Flemish folk singer-songwriter who closed its doors on 17th December 2000...

Since then the non profit organisation have found a new home at the former Belsele primary school just across the street from the demolished 't Eynde. The move, set up as a public party with musical band, really rang in a new era.

Indeed: over the last eight years this new location has been transformed by tens of volunteers and one half-time paid employee into a music club really worthy of its name. In their first year (2000) the team already organised some 15 concerts, a number that was to rise as the load of rebuilding work diminished. We can boast of a rising number of concertgoers every year. 2007 peaked at some 4000 visitors to our club.

't Ey is located in the village's former primary school at Koutermolenstraat 6b in 9111 Belsele, joined to Sint Niklaas, about half way between Ghent and Antwerp. The property has been given in long lease contract by the city council up to 2027.

The building holds various rooms: a 100 -seat concert hall, a 'foyer' or lounge for some 70 people, a kitchen, a backstage resting room with shower, an attic fully refurnished for rehearsals and an office.

All of the Ey activities are made possible by tens and tens of ready volunteers. A steering committee hold responsibility, meet on a regular basis at least once a month and set out the club's policy as best as possible. All volunteers have a say in the running of the club at public meetings, organised three times a year.

The prime motive for our engagement to this kind of music is not purely entertainment: we believe that such small-scale concerts as we organise them really bring people closer together.As a result, we are opposed to a commercialised music scene, even if that would be a folk scene. Yet we want our gigs to be organised in a professional way with an eye for real quality, in exchange for a bit of respect of public and musicians alike. This is the only profit we make. Let the surplus value of our stage be food for the soul...

Over 't Ey

In 1991 werd de voorloper van 't Ey, 't Eynde, opgericht. Tot 2000, het jaar dat het pand in de Eindestraat verlaten moest worden, organiseerde de vzw er enkele honderden concerten en andere culturele activiteiten. Niet alleen folkconcerten, het domein waarIin de vereniging zich (IN) profileerde, werden georganiseerd, maar ook populaire acts als Raymond vh Groenewoud, Philip Catherine, Willem Vermandere of Wannes Van de Velde passeerden er het podium. Artiesten uit de hele wereld traden op in die tot theaterzaaltje omgetoverde koeienstal. Ook van heel wat etnische muziek kon het publiek er genieten. Wannes Van de Velde, de gerenomeerde Vlaamse artiest sloot op 17 december 2000 de deur van 't Eynde: de bruine kroeg moest wijken voor een apartementsgebouw. Vanaf 2000 vond de vzw 't Ey echter onderdak in de gewezen basisschool van Belsele, aan de overzijde van waar 't Eynde was. Een ludieke publieke verhuis met muziek luidde het nieuw tijdperk in.

Gedurende de jongste acht jaar werd de locatie door tientallen vrijwilligers en één halftijdse werkkracht omgebouwd tot een muziekclub die naam waardig. Tijdens het jaar 2000 werden een vijftiental concerten georganiseerd, een aantal dat steeg naarmate de werkzaamheden aan het gebouw verminderden. We ontvangen jaarlijks een stijgend aantal concertbezoekers. In 2007 waren dat er meer dan 4000.

't Ey bevindt zich in de Koutermolenstraat 6b, 9111 Belsele in de gebouwen van de oude basisschool van Belsele. Belsele is een deelgemeente van de stad Sint-Niklaas, gelegen ongeveer halfweg tussen Antwerpen en Gent. De gebouwen zijn in erfpacht gegeven door het stadsbestuur van Sint-Niklaas tot 2027.

Het gebouw bestaat uit een zaal die ruimte biedt voor honderd toeschouwers(zittend), een foyer (70 plaatsen), een keuken, een backstageruimte met douche, een repetitiezolder en een secretariaat.

De werking van 't Ey is mogelijk dankzij tientallen vrijwilligers. Een stuurgroep met acht verantwoordelijken die op regelmatige basis (minstens 1 maal per maand) formeel bij elkaar komt, tracht het beleid degelijk uit te stippelen.

De vrijwilligers hebben via een beraad (dat drie keer per jaar wordt georganiseerd) inspraak in het reilen en zeilen van onze vereniging.

Ons hoofdmotief om met muziek bezig te zijn is niet gebaseerd op louter entertainment. We geloven dat het kleinschalige organiseren van podiumacts mensen echt bij elkaar brengt. We zetten ons af tegen een gecommercialiseerde muziekwereld zelfs al zou dit een folkmuziekwereld zijn… We organiseren graag op een kwalitatieve, professionele manier in ruil voor een beetje respect van publiek en muzikant. Dit is de enige winst die wij maken. De meerwaarde van ons podium is voedsel voor de ziel…

't Ey krijgt steun van de stad Sint-Niklaas, de Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en de Vlaamse Gemeenschap.

À propos de 't Ey

1991 était l’année où le prédécesseur de ’ t Ey, à savoir ’t Eynde (la Fin) fut fondé. Jusqu’en 2000, l’année où les bâtiments situés Eindestraat devaient être abandonnés, l’ASBL (association sans but lucratif) y avait organisé des centaines de concerts et d’autres activités culturelles. Non seulement des concerts folk, le domaine dans lequel l’association se définissait, des chanteurs populaires tels que Raymond van het Groenewoud, Philip Catherine, Willem Vermandere ou Wannes Van de Velde y passaient la revue. Des artistes du monde entier s’y produisaient dans une ancienne étable, miraculeusement convertie en petite salle de théâtre. Le public y jouissait également de musique ethnique. Ce fut Wannes Van de Velde, l’artiste flamand renommé, qui ferma la porte de ‘t Eynde le 17 décembre 2000. Le vieux café devait céder la place à un nouvel immeuble.

Heureusement l’ASBL ‘t Ey pouvait s’installer dans les bâtiments de l’ancienne école primaire de Belsele, juste en face de ‘t Eynde abattu. Un déménagement public accompagné de musique, annonça une nouvelle ère.

En effet, au cours des huit dernières années, ce nouvel hébergement a été transformé par des dizaines de volontaires et un employé à mi-temps, en un club de musique qui mérite bien ce nom.

Déjà en 2000 une quinzaine de concerts y étaient organisés, un nombre qui montait à mesure que les travaux diminuaient. Chaque année le nombre de visiteurs de concerts allait en croissant. En 2007 on comptait déjà plus de 4000 visiteurs.

‘t Ey se situe Koutermolenstraat 6b à 9111 Belsele dans les bâtiments de l’ancienne école primaire de Belsele. Belsele fait partie de la ville de Sint-Niklaas, à mi-chemin entre Anvers et Gand. La propriété a été donnée à bail emphytéotique par le conseil communal de Sint-Niklaas jusqu’en 2027. Le bâtiment comprend la salle (offrant 100 places assises), le foyer (70 places), la cuisine, le back-stage avec douche, le grenier aménagé pour répétitions et le secrétariat. Toutes les activités dans ‘t Ey sont réalisées grâce à l’aide et l’enthousiasme de dizaines de volontaires. Un groupe directeur de 8 responsables se réunit régulièrement (au moins une fois par mois) pour définir au mieux la politique du club. Lors des 3 concertations organisées annuellement les volontaires peuvent participer à l’organisation de l’association.

Le motif principal de notre engagement pour ce genre de musique n’est pas l’amusement tel quel. Nous croyons que l’organisation de concerts à petite échelle rapproche vraiment les gens. Ainsi on s’insurge contre une scène musicale commercialisée même si c’était une scène folk. On s’efforce d’organiser des activités qualitatives de façon professionnelle en échange d’un peu de respect de la part du public et des musiciens. C’est le seul profit qu’on fait. La plus-value de notre podium nourrit notre âme…
