Jarek Adamów and Paweł Brzozowski "Contemporary Polish Village Music" Folken Music, 2006 Jarek Adamów & Sami Swoi "Expedition to the Lost World Part 1 - Winter" Folken Music, 2006 www.myspace.com/folkenmusic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two older releases by the Polish multi instrumentalist Jarek Adamów. In the last issue of FolkWorld I wrote a review of two of his more recent projects[44] and in 2003 I put his solo album in my list of best albums of the year. These two older releases show the creativity of Adamov. With constantly the rich Polish tradition as basic element he keeps surprising me with new ideas and new sounds. On the album he recorded with Paweł Brzozowski, he brings the sounds and traditions of the country together with some modern Polish rock guitars and programming. What I like is that even in the rock parts you still find the rawness and pureness of the Polish culture. With sometimes almost industrial sounds, Adamów creates an impressive landscape and builds a bridge between the old and new Polish society. How different the other album is! Here he plays the accordion, bass drum and sings together with the traditional vocal female trio Sami Swoi. This is back to the basic elements of the Polish music, the aged voices of the three older woman, the simple rhythms and the rich sound of the accordion. Totally different than the other album, but somehow they reflect the same feeling. With adding these two older releases to my Adamów CD collection I’m getting more and more impressed by the work of this Polish musician and singer. © Eelco Schilder FolkWorld #45 07/2011 http://www.folkworld.de/45/e/cds7.html
"Memories of the Stone", new cd of SieGra band, is the laureat of Polish Radio competition - Folk Phonograph of the Year 2010 !!! www.myspace.com/siegra __________________________________________________________________ Płyta zespołu SieGra - "Memories of the Stone" - laureatem konkursu organizowanego przez Polskie Radio - Folkowy Fonogram Roku 2010 !!!
SIEGRA Memories of the Stone: Wlodawa Synagogue Live Recording, Folken 3 Recorded in a 300-year-old synagogue made of stone, this album is indeed about the memories of the stone. Polish trio SieGra, comprised of accordion, clarinet and double bass, explore old Yiddish, Polish and Balkan melodies, along with a fair sprinkling of original work among the album’s 19 tracks. Along with folk melodies there’s a sense of early classical music, extemporisation and the avant garde, seamlessly welded together into a whole by the band’s technique. There’s a real dark beauty and resonance to the playing, where each instrument feeds from and builds on the others to make each track into its own world, enclosed and almost hermetic, but also part of the larger whole that’s the album. It’s an unusual piece of work, quite mesmerizing. The musicians have a background in traditional music (clarinettist Adamów has made a couple of CDs of village recordings, for instance) and classical training that serve as good foundations for what they’re creating here. It’s different, haunting, a past of the imagination as much as of fact. And it’s quite beautiful. — CN Sing Out !
JAREK ADAMOW, Etnomalia Projekt , (Folken Music 04). This Polish quartet plays music that’s as much jazz-rock as it is klezmer. Their melodies are certainly klezmer inspired, but many of the pieces are fairly long and seem to contain a fair amount of jazz-like improvisation. No question that these guys have great chops – clarinetist Jarek is particularly impressive. I recommend this CD to klezmer fans who also enjoy jazz. — KR Sing Out ! www.myspace.com/etnomaliaprojekt
The Polish musician Jarek Adamov was one of the first Polish musicians who stole my (music) heart. In 2003 I got his Songs of the medieval Polish bards album and I got fascinated by the feeling of this wonderful album. What I liked is his capability to create a complete own style and a unique atmosphere without being a master on every instrument he plays. I remember from that album that his hurdy gurdy play wasn’t that good technically spoken, but I believed every note he played and found that he touched exactly the right tone and that is a unique talent. Now, seven years later, I have two albums for review with him as (one of) the central musicians and I just couldn’t wait to hear what he is doing at the moment. The first one is his Ethnomalia Project on which he plays Polish klezmer music. On the album he explains that Polish klezmer is a totally different style than what we in the western part of Europe think it is. In Poland, he explains, Klezmer musicians are those who can play almost every style and not only Jewish music. He is backed by a guitar, bass guitar and drummer and Adamow self plays the clarinet and kaval. The CD starts with a naked kaval solo which is followed by beautiful melodic folk-rock with Russian, Polish and Jewish influences amongst others. I love his fluent way of playing and the easy going musical arrangements make this a very open album. Adamow doesn’t make simple things complicated, he plays a tune in his pure form and let the melody speaks for itself. Besides this, more or less, solo project he is also part of the Siegra trio and with their Memories of the Stone this trio, which exists besides Adamow out of Robert Brozozowski on bass and vocals and Bartłomiej Stańczyk on accordion and vocals, plays music inspired by central European tradition. Polish, Yiddish and Bosnian traditional pieces are mixed with original compositions and recorded live at the Włodawa synagogue. The lightness I felt while listening the Ethnomalia album is totally gone now. Here is something totally different going on, this is a cooperation of three top musicians who bring a passionate tribute to ancient music and culture. Compliments for bassist Brzozowski who has to deal with two virtuoso solo musicians and does this with style and craftsmanship. His subtle way of playing the bass is essential for the sound of this group. He build the pavement on which the other two can trust and stand with both feet and play, just play. Listen to the nice symbioses of the instruments, the smart musical arrangements and feel the richness of their music. © Eelco Schilder . Poland has become one of the leading countries in the Klezmer music renaissance. Kroke is perhaps the most successful act, but other bands and musicians are also contributing to the movement. Jarek Adamow is involved in various projects. His own band, called Jarek Adamow Projekt, has a new album titled New Polish Klezmer Music. Adamow shows that in Poland klezmer goes beyond Central and Eastern European Jewish music. His band ventures into jazz improvisation and folk sounds from other parts of ther globe. “Musicians in Poland still use the word klezmer, but in a different context than in the U.S, or western Europe,” says Adamow. “For us a klezmer is a musician who plays many styles, who can play everything, even bossa nova or some ritual dances from Africa, not only Jewish music.” On the album Memories of the Stone, Adamow appears as part of the band Siegra. The group plays music inspired by the folklore of Central Europe. Originally a quartet, the band now features three musicians: Adamow on clarinet, darbuka, kaval, sopilka and vocals; Bartlomiej Stanczyk on accordion and vocals; and Robert Brzozowski on double bass and vocals. Memories of the Stone contains original pieces as well as traditional Yiddish music and folk songs from Bulgaria, Poland and Bosnia. The album was recorded live in the Wlodawa synagogue...

SING OUT - The folk song magazine !.. JAREK ADAMOW AND PAWEL BRZOZOWSKI Contemporary Polish Village Music Folken 02............................... Right now, the world of folk music seems a glorious place. Hardcore traditionalists might hate the idea of progress, but it's an expanding universe, and this is a prime example, taking samples of Polish village music and slotting them in with accordion, distorted electric guitar, bass, drum and programming. Some of the music's traditional, some original, and there are interludes of village sounds (like the barking of dogs, which becomes a little disconcerting). It's quite deliberately an odd hybrid (but not as strange as an old album that features Polish family singing with a reggae band--in dub. Now that one's weird but wonderful), happy to stand outside categorization. One track is reminiscent of Nirvana, another offers a hint of dance music. One's called "Rammstein" after the German metal band, but doesn't sound at all metal. Sometimes the samples are obvious, sometimes they're barely used, or the music stands alone. It's an exercise in loving contradictions, inspired by the Polish villages--places that are themselves in transition, pushing into the 21st Century. It doesn't all work, it can be untidy and sprawling at times, but that's part of its point--it's avoiding any kind of perfection in favour of the homespun. And, of course, these days that includes recording technology. It's a large step away from Adamow's more traditionally-oriented last album, but it works in a strange, compelling way. It's a Poland that's both slipping into the past and also ready for the future, and yes, it's fab.--CN COPYRIGHT 2008 Sing Out Corporation COPYRIGHT 2008 Gale, Cengage Learning

Folker - Das musik magazin... JAREK ADAMÓW & SAMI SWOI Expedition To The Lost World, Part I - Winter ............................................................................... Folken CD 01 (2006) .................................................................................................... Young Polish revival traditional musician Jarek Adamów, whose solo second album was reviewed in fR 252, here combines his singing, melodeon, foot-stamping and bass drum with the voices of four elderly surviving members, one male and three female, of 1980-founded village music group Sami Swoi from the Polish-Ukrainian border. They’re not virtuoso singers, but Adamów says he wanted to make something a little like the archive recordings he loves. He points out that today’s listeners might find some of the subject matter strange, but says “I just tried to catch the moment in time which was about 70 years ago, and be as authentic as possible”. Whatever the disputes one might have with the concept and possibility of ‘authenticity’, he has certainly made an album which is more varied and enjoyable than simply recording these singers as is, with no musical input from him; the result is uncondescending, non-flashy and appealing in its warmth, and it brings out the melodic variety and interest of the songs. The release, on his own label, the first of what he plans as a series, has just a simple single-fold booklet; financial resources are probably tight, but an expansion would have been welcome, to include more information about the songs, and also about these four people - photographed for the cover in traditional costume and calf-deep in snow - and their relation to their tradition...Andrew Cronshaw

Label: Global Village; 821; 2003; Playing time: 34.14 min ................................ Jarek Adamov is a Polish musician and former member of the Polish band Sie Gra. He recorded a debut cd in 2000 which made him win the Polish record of the year award. Now he just released his second solo cd "Songs of the Polish medieval bards". The songs presented on this cd are old ballads which have been performed throughout Poland by wandering bards. Jarek collected a few ballads and tunes which he recorded with Hurdy-gurdy, clarinet, whistles and percussion. Jarek keeps his music very sober which is the strength of this cd. It starts with a tune with only the drone of a hurdy gurdy and a slow tune played on clarinet. Already in this first track he creates a dark, mystic atmosphere which continues for the rest of the cd. Also his ballads are very intense, Podolanka, for example, is almost hypnotising. Jarek sings this ballad like a prayer with the hurdy-gurdy playing a different melody. I cant help it, it forces to listen over and over again. This were only the first two songs but it keeps on being fantastic music until the last tone. I love the way he uses the hurdy-gurdy in a very simple but 100% effective way. Within nine songs he shows several sides of Polish ancient music which were until now completely unknown to me. I can only recommend this album as it, in my opinion, is one of the best cd's of 2003 I've heard so far... Eelco Schilder.

SING OUT - The folk song magazine ! Jarek Adamow Songs of the Medieval Polish Bards. pubdate:[20040319;20040325] | Copyright informationCOPYRIGHT 2004 Sing Out Corporation ..Global Village 821............................................................ A fascinating album, although the title isn't quite truth in advertising. The nine pieces here aren't all songs, and some instrumentals aren't medieval--in fact, only the texts here appear to be old but don't let niggling details detract from the enjoyment. Adamow is a musician of great depth, adept on clarinet, hurdy-gurdy, drum, soprano and bass sopika, and whistle. It's a valiant attempt at recreating a time and, even more, a mood of a time that's rarely been explored. Typically for Central Europe, there are all manner of influences, including the Jewish sounds that would eventually become klezmer, and the fairly retained wildness of the music of the Rom people, which mingled freely with Polish folk music. Some pieces do work better than others, with the songs generally coming across with more intensity than the instrumentals. That it's a labor of love is quite apparent--this isn't going to gain Adamow any widespread fame. But he's endlessly questing and inventive, and you have to admire that. ... CN

Jarek Adamów is associated with folk scene for eleven years. He graduated Music Academy ( Conservatoire ) in Poland, in Lódź. His thesis was about novadays reconstructions of very old Polish traditional songs. After that moment he started to make music very strongly inspired by Polish Folklore. As a member of few bands he played clarinet, but then he gradually broadened his instrumentarium including drums ( bass drum, darabuka ), sopiłka ( soprano, bass ). He was very successful and won among others : I place - " Mikołajki folkowe " festival in Lublin 1997 I place - " Nowa Tradycja " festival in Warsaw 1998 I place - " Folkowa majówka " festival in Radom 1999 II place - " Nowa Tradycja " 2002, as a soloist. In september 1999 he recorded debutante's cd which scored " Folk Phonograph of the Year ". In 2000 Jarek participated in musical festival led by " Brave Old World " in Weimar in clarinet class of Kurt Bjorling, improving his technique. In 2003 he recorded second cd issued by Global Village Music - "Songs of the Medieval Polish Bards" which scored Polish prize - " Laureat of the Folk Phonograph of the Year ". He performed a concert in the best and most prestige concert hall in Poland - Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw, all one was transmitted by Polish Radio. In 2004 he presented old ballads in Rudolstadt at Tanz and Folk Fest, festival. His concert in church was many times retransmitted by German Radio. Global Village 821............ But he's endlessly questing and inventive, and you have to admire that. ... CN .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... Since 2001 Jarek Adamów together with the theatre Teatr NN has produced and performed story based on The Tales of Chassids - a music-theatre form integrating live illustrative music with Chassidic stories (http://www.tnn.lublin.pl/spektakle/tryptyk/).They were very successfull and played in the most pretigious theatre places in Poland and Sweden. In 2000 together with "SIE GRA" band published CD with the Polish label MTJ. The second album of this trio, made together with Bartłomiej Stańczyk and Robert Brzozowski was recorded in a very special place – the most extreme eastern point of Poland, where Ukraine, Belarus and Poland meet, in a small Shtetl - Włodawa, in a XVII century synagogue that lies next to a catholic and an orthodox church. In 2007 he issued first cd of his own label - organization " Folken Music " , recorded together with very old Polish traditional vocal ansamble " Sami Swoi " - " Expedition to the lost world ". We invite all of you to visit this land of music and hear masterpieces from one of his recent project recorded together with Paweł Brzozowski - " Contemporary Polish Village Music" , SieGra - " Memories of the Stone - Włodawa Synagogue Live Recordings " and ETNOMALIA Projekt - " New Polish Klezmer Music "
