   About Folkworks

Folkworks was officially founded 20 years ago by Alistair Anderson and Ros Rigby – two people still at the heart of Folkworks activities – as the folk development agency for North East England and Cumbria. The aim was always to present the best performers – local, national and international – to entertain and inspire, and to provide parallel opportunities for people to actively participate in and play the music themselves.

Over the past 20 years, Folkworks has run annual Summer Schools, countless one-day courses, training for teachers and workshop leaders, and even established England’s only degree course in Folk & Traditional Music. Folkworks has presented hundreds of unique concerts – many as part of acclaimed national tours – and has inspired thousands of people to take up or develop their interest in folk music. A number of these people are now working as professional musicians.

Folkworks activity is now part of the programme at The Sage Gateshead. The company chose to become part of the North Music Trust in 2002 – and although the Folkworks organisation no longer exists as such, its name and ethos still mark a distinctive programme of activity.

ELEVATOR FOLK III at The Cumberland Arms

MONDAY 19th OCTOBER - 7.30pm

starring...

LESLEY ROLEY
THE CORNSHED SISTERS
GREG GENRE
KATE IN THE KETTLE

4 fanastic acts for £4.00!!

Every month, Elevator Folk promotes the very best in original folk, acoustic and alternative musical talent in Newcastle and the North East.  We feature four equally brilliant acts at each gig, and they perform completely unamplified - no mikes - which makes for a cozy, intimate atmosphere that you won't find at many other gigs in Newcastle.  Combined with the excellent beers on offer at The Cumberland, it's a fab night out...  If you love live music and you love great songwriting, then this is the show for you!
