Speaker: Keith McHenry, Food Not Bombs Co-founder
Thursday, April 17, 7:30 pm
Humanities Building, Rm. 132
SUNY Albany

Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry will give a presentation about the history of the movement and the many things it has accomplished around the world. He will show a dvd about his work in Africa and talk about how to start a Food Not Bombs group. Keith has spent over 500 days in jail for feeding the hungry. Amnesty International declared him a 'Prisoner of Conscience' and worked for his unconditional release. Today Food Not Bombs is a global movement sharing vegetarian food with the hungry and working for peace and social justice. Keith has visited Food Not Bombs groups in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and the Middle East and will share his experiences of cooking and feeding the hungry.

Interfaith Peace Walk

Aug 29 - Sep 11, 2007

Grafton, NY to New York City

"We have no time for nations to make WAR. We must take care of this beautiful planet."

Among the problems besetting our country is the hidden presence of global warming. Our abuse of fossil fuels has begun to change the earth's atmosphere, bringing climate instability, dramatic storms, rising sea levels, loss of animal and plant species, human health threats and ominous public silence.

Our walk is a loving prayer for renewal of Mother Earth-- and the International Kyoto Agreement to restore her climate.

“It is rapidly becoming apparent that the issue of climate change overshadows all the other great problems facing humanity: war and peace, poverty, hunger, disease. In fact, it is intertwined with all of these….”Paul Mayer (see entire article at www.climatecrisiscoalition.org/mayer-call-to-ac tion.html)

Na Mu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo

Walk Itinerary

Aug 29 (Wed) Grafton Peace Pagoda -> Stephentown

Aug 30 (Thu) Stephentown -> Canaan

Aug 31 (Fri) Canaan -> Stockbridge

Sep 1 (Sat) Stockbridge -> Great Barrington -> Hillsdale

Sep 2 (Sun) Hillsdale -> Millerton

Sep 3 (Mon) Millerton -> Dover Plains

Sep 4 (Tue) Dover Plains -> Pawling

Sep 5 (Wed) Pawling -> Brewster

Sep 6 (Thu) Brewster -> Yorktown

Sep 7 (Fri) Yorktown -> Peekskill

Sep 8 (Sat) Peekskill -> Ossining

When presented with these facts, two-thirds of Americans would change these budget priorities, shifting funding away from the Pentagon and into programs that benefit communities, families and the environment Truemajority.org

Sep 10 (Mon) Dobbs Ferry -> George Washington Bridge

REPOST REPOST REPOST

Help Protest Beck Furs and the Cruel Fur Industry 11/24/06

This year, animal advocates and compassionate citizens from the Capital District will be participating in a peaceful protest for the animals on Fur Free Friday.

Fur Free Friday 2006 will be held in Guilderland this year at the corner of Fuller Road and Western Avenue, right outside of Stuvesant Plaza’s Beck Furs location. Signs and literature will be provided. Protestors are to remain on the sidewalk and road easement on Fuller and Western. We will expand out as protestors join us. If you have a sign or literature of your own, please bring it to the demonstration. We will be protesting Beck Furs from noon until 2PM. Please be prompt if not early. Please contact Andy at (518) 332-5932 or adtesto@syr.edu for more information.

Fur-Free Friday, an annual event that takes place the Friday after Thanksgiving, aims to educate people about the horrors endured by fur-bearing animals. Fur Free Friday is set on this day because ‘Black Friday’ has typically been the busiest shopping day of the year. Challenges to consumerism and greedy habits are challenged worldwide on this day from events like Fur Free Friday to Critical Mass Bike Rides to Buy Nothing Day events. Organized originally in 1986 by grassroots activists to abolish the fur trade, Fur-Free Friday has grown to be one of the most widely attended annual demonstrations of the animal rights movement. Through protests, education, and the promotion of cruelty-free fashion, we give a voice to the millions of animals who suffer and die each year. Please visit www.furfreefriday.com

Protest Etiquette: The City of Guilderland has granted us permission to hold this demonstration on the legal sidewalk and road easements. Please do not leaflet to cars, or try to obstruct traffic. Doing so may result in a fine, and will only degrade our protest and future opportunities to oppose such forms of blatant animal cruelty. Please remain off of Stuyvesant Plaza, the Plaza is private property with a no-protester policy that may subject you to penalties. Please bring warm clothes to remain outside for the two hours we will be there. The protest begins at 12 sharp. Please be prompt and stay the full time if at all possible. Media attention is likely to be drawn, from press releases near the beginning of the demonstration, so please help show our numbers accurately. While protesting, protesters are kindly asked to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and drugs. If your lifestyle includes these, please remember to leave them at home and do not participate in the demonstration with paraphernalia or under the influence. For any etiquette policies, or further questions please contact Andy (518) 332-5932, adtesto@syr.edu. When arriving at the protest, or if a problem arises please find Andy.
