ford to city drop dead records is an indie label out of NYC. our sensability is modern moving music that harkens back to the era when new york was still cool, bankrupt, beautiful and mostly hispanic. in 1975 the city was in financial trouble and president ford refused to help, inspiring the famous daily news headline, "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD". rent was cheap and the drinking age of 18 was never enforced. before new york was a corporate mall owned by nyu and full of rich college kids, it was a breeeding ground for great art and music and film. ALSO THAT YEAR, 1975, saturday night live came on the air, featuring low-production-value short films and underground music- the patti smith group played sloppy covers, house party style. Dog Day Afternoon, which was up for best picture but lost to one flew over the cuckoo's nest, feautured nyc in the opening credits while elton john sang Amoreena, a montage of beauty. elton's someone saved my life tonight was a top hit. the ramones signed to sire. the carpenters rocked am radio, the new york dolls were just breaking up and johnny thunders had just started the heartbreakers with jerry nolan, walter lure and richard hell, come on people!. kids ran free in the fire hydrant in the hot august summers and noboby turned them off or made them get out of the street. thanks for listening.
