"FORGIVEN"
A feature length documentary Co-Directed by The Downs Brothers. Hired by conservative Christians, the liberal Downs Brothers were asked to document the testimony of Born-Again Felons serving Life Sentences behind bars at Angola Penitentiary in Lousiana. Our access was strictly controlled and focused on born-again inmates and the Christian Bible college located inside Prison walls. Warden Burl Cain and his Prison Media Representative strictly controlled the access of our cameras. We could focus only on the religious conversion stories of born again Christians serving life sentences for murder, rape and robbery.
As filmmakers we were not allowed to stray off subject. We were forbidden to ask about the crimes that put these born again felons behind bars. With these restrictions we let the mens stories unfold without judgement or advocacy. Stylistically we have attempted as well to visualize for better or worse the kind of transformation these prisoners describe upon turning to God and evangelizing other inmates behind bars.
Forgiven" is set against the incongruous beauty of the Louisiana swamp and the strange college-like dorm setting of this maximum security prison which houses Louisiana's most violent criminals, 85% of which will die behind bars.
In the end "Forgiven" is a call for reform and forgiveness and focuses on the power of compassion-based programs in prison and the effect these programs have on rehabilitating inmates......
