In Yiddish, forshpil means “prelude” or “foreplay”. In klezmer music this is the section of a tune, in which the soloist is free to improvise on the melody of the piece. The freedom of interpreting Yiddish music within the tradition is an important concept for the ensemble.
Forshpil takes old Yiddish folk songs, hassidic nigunim and klezmer tunes and integrates them into contemporary musical culture, drawing inspiration from modal jazz, funk, rock, reggae, classical, latin and balkan music… and anything else that inspires. Continuous experiments with forms, structures, rhythms, harmonies and the expressive roles of the instruments lead to exciting and often unexpected results.
As a duo, Forshpil creates intimate and engaging versions of Yiddish love songs in a moving dialogue between the voice and the piano. With the addition of bass and drums, Forshpil also performs as a four-piece band, giving the same repertoire a different quality and opening another, a more dynamic and vibrant side of Yiddish music.
Forshpil is often invited to collaborate with internationally acclaimed artists including Mark Kovnatskij (Germany), Zoe Christiansen (USA), Dan Kahn (Germany), Timur Fishel (Estonia), Samuel Heyfetz (USA), Kaisa Koivula (Finland), Alexey Rozov (Russia), Etien Levi (Bulgaria) and many others.
The band was founded in 2003 in Riga, Latvia. Since then, Forshpil has traveled around the world, studying and playing at world music and Jewish music festivals and concerts in Latvia, Europe, Russia and North America.
