About me:

FOUR PAWS is an international animal charity. We are campaigning to end animal suffering and cruelty. In 1994 FOUR PAWS started to work internationally and today has offices in nine European countries. This international approach allows FOUR PAWS to lobby and campaign more effectively improving animal welfare and improving thousands of animals’ lives each year. Our vision is a world without animal suffering. We believe that every animal has a right to be treated with respect and dignity.

Who I'd like to meet:

CYBER MARCHERS CALL ON EUROPE TO TAKE ACTION ON ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS

As MEPs prepare to vote next month (May 09) on proposals to update Europe’s animal experiments directive, animal advocates are taking to cyber-space to demonstrate public support with a virtual march on the European Parliament. Launched today by Four Paws, the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, and the Humane Society International, the Make Animal Testing History virtual march is a global first for animal protection campaigning. It is being launched throughout the European Union to coincide with World Week for Animals in Laboratories.

More than 12 million animals are used in experiments in Europe each year. Animals such as rodents, rabbits, cats, dogs and monkeys are used in experiments that can cause physical and mental distress. The law that regulates experiments, Directive 86/609, is more than 20 years old and desperately out of date.

Improvements have been proposed such as better animal protection, a phase-out of primate experiments, ethical review and real progress on non-animal alternatives. However, pharmaceutical and animal research industries are lobbying hard to thwart new welfare measures, even opposing limits on the level of pain animals are allowed to suffer or the number of times they can be re-used in experiments.

Following the initial emergency aid measures in the Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks, FOUR PAWS embarked on a full scale Disaster Relief mission in drought-struck Kenya. The team had been assembled from Europe and South Africa and started working in Maralal in the Samburu district. 30.000 animals – mostly cows, sheep and goats – were dewormed, provided with food, and received medical help with antibiotics and vitamins.

The six bears at the Austrian FOUR PAWS bear park BÄRENWALD Arbesbach are preparing themselves for a long cold winter. In addition to the food options they find in their plot they are being fed a nutritious fare of noodles, eggs, nuts and other edibles that are rich in content. Female bear Brumca is currently leading in this natural competition: she has gained considerably in weight.

Trotus: Saved by Stray Animal Care Team

The work of a FOUR PAWS team in the Romanian town of Comanesti began with a tragic find: a dehydrated and almost starved kitten was picked up from the banks of the river Trotus. In the mobile vet clinic of Stray Animal Care (SAC), members of the medical staff were trying to save his life – with little hope left for the fragile cat that was apparently abandoned by the owners of its mother, shortly after it was born. What happened then was a miracle: in the hands of FOUR PAWS skillful staff, the tiny kitten recovered, put on weight and started to live.

Adopted by the entire team, the cat was named after the river on the banks of which it was found: Trotus. Barely breathing and dehydrated from basking in the summer sun, things had been looking bleak for the small patient when it arrived. Loving care and considerable know-how brought the little fellow back from the almost dead: Trotus started to eat well and play with the FOUR PAWS staff as any normal kitten would. It became a much adored relief from the demanding daily work with stray dogs and cats caught and cared for during the team’s stay in the popular Romanian summer resort.

The search for a loving home

The work in Comanesti was straining but successful: hundreds of dogs and cats received medical treatment and can no longer be killed by the authorities. For Trotus, however, a life on the street would have been impossible to adapt to, so the FOUR PAWS staff started to search for a home. Shortly before the final day in Comanesti had come, a lady dropped by at the mobile vet clinic and instantly fell in love with the coltish kitten! She agreed to take care of Trotus and provide all the fostering and attention needed in a happy cat’s life. ‘Troty’ was lucky twice – as FOUR PAWS was leaving town, he became the big cat of hi

The Netherlands: Circus reports confirm animal welfare problems

Two current reports commissioned by the Dutch government reveal the suffering of wild animals in circuses. The investigated circuses do not even meet their own guidelines.

    The reports state alarming facts:

A shocking 71% of the animals show clinical abnormities. These vary from paralysis of a tiger and suspected TBC contamination of an elephant.
The housing conditions are not sufficient, for example lions are kept in a small cage nearly the whole day, without an outside enclosure. Elephants are chained 17 hours a day, with severe consequences: more than 10 hours a day they show stereotypical behaviour, a symptom of chronic stress.
Elephants were transported without drinking water for more than 22 hours.
The nutritional condition of elephants, tigers and lions was not sufficient in 66% of the cases.

Hello ~ thank you for being a friend of Moonwarriors. 800 dogs & cats are killed every hour in the US, often by inhumane methods such as gassing or heart sticking. This cruel disposal of homeless & stray animals is paid for by your taxes. Sponsors of petitions promoting no-kill alternatives have shown that it would be more cost effective & humane to fund spay-neuter programs, adoption schemes & sanctuaries.

"What is unconscionable, abominable and outrageous is that animals, healthy and well-behaved, are being killed because someone says there are too many. That is something we do not accept. That is something we find intolerable" - Richard Avanzino, President, San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (1997)

Please visit my blog for more info & to sign petitions to end the animal gas chambers:

Carmen meets her pride at LIONSROCK

Carmen, the last lioness of the pack from former safari park Gaenserndorf in Austria to arrive at the South African FOUR PAWS big cat sanctuary, is settling in rapidly at LIONSROCK. Contact with her family is being established slowly, nonetheless - so far Carmen is living in a feeding enclosure where the others can smell her. She has quickly become her old self again: the lioness FOUR PAWS staff members always knew as quiet and trusting, and who now has finally arrived to a better life.

In order to ensure that Carmen has been given the time to get to know her new surroundings and have a veterinary check up, the lioness was temporarily accommodated in a small enclosure that borders the area of her pride. Although she was anxiously squatting in a corner at first, her family members immediately showed interest in the new arrival. Leo, leader of the group, was holding back the others at first, until he had sniffed at her sufficiently to be sure that it was Carmen who had indeed arrived at their home.

In a very short time Carmen had lost her timidness and showed interest in her environment. A FOUR PAWS employee made a hut located in between the two areas accessible to the group in order to facilitate interaction. Carmen's youngest daughter Kiara spends a lot of time with her during this period. After she has received a clean bill of health and her body clock has normalised, Carmen will be reunited with her old pride. It is a happy ending that many have fought for, and that is now becoming reality. Carmen, the quietest lioness of the group, can now also lead the life she in entitled to.

Help End The Factory Farming of Rabbits - UK Campaign Update

As you may be aware, Four Paws campaigns to end the factory farming of rabbits in cages throughout Europe. The welfare of farmed rabbits is in need of urgent attention. The majority of caged systems not too dissimilar to the barren battery cages used for egg laying hens, which you may be aware will be banned in Europe in 2012.

Early Day Motion on Rabbit Welfare

Early Day Motions enable Members of Parliament (MPs) to express their opinion on a subject and bring attention to it. If enough signatures are gathered it can put pressure on Government Ministers to take action. It is also a wonderful opportunity to generate public and media interest.

Adrian Sanders MP has put forward an Early Day Motion (EDM) 1515, before the House which seeks to improve the welfare of farmed rabbits in the UK.

You can read it by clicking on this link http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=38685&SESSION=899

It lists all the M.Ps who have signed it so you may wish to check it before sending your letter or email.
