depends on the band...in general I think of the violin (and music) as based on friction, not smoothness.
I play with:
Celtic Sands, acoustic Celtic music
Ocean Sands, classical chamber music
the Santa Cruz Symphony, San Francisco Sinfonietta, and various other professional orchestras
and a local Irish rebel band , the famous one.
