Cherry -
‘World Waits EP’ -
Four Twenty (12” & Digital) Four:053
Released March 2010

Japanese producer Cherry returns to Bristol’s Four:Twenty in March with his second EP, the “World Waits EP”, backed with a typically superb remix from Areal/Kompakt producer Ada.
As with his first EP for the incredibly consistent Four:Twenty, “The Alex EP”, “The World Waits” is melodic, electronic house at it’s best. Unselfconscious and emotive, the Toyko based producer’s output sees him drawn in a myriad of influences to create something which sidesteps trends masterfully.
Title track “World Waits” is a mammoth 12 and a half minute excursion into
layering of melodies which is completely mesmerising. Simplistic drum programming, with just a smattering of variation, combined with an equally simplistic arrangement allows the dominant, nagging synth riff to steal your attention and hold it throughout.
Cologne’s Ada delivers an equally hypnotic take but pursues a more reductionist avenue. An 808 kit provides the backbone while the original’s riffs are tempered with filtering and a more sporadic structure. Subtle strings are also added and add just a modicum of intensity to great effect.
“When The Truth Is” rounds the package off with a captivating mix of melancholic jazz piano, sinister soundscapes and drum/sub interplay which while certainly more sample based than it’s A-side, is no less original.
This is yet another wholly ‘different’ release from Four:Twenty and showcases yet another great new talent.
FOUR:TWENTY PRESENT TJ KONG 'SERENADE'
FOUR:052 Released Feb 2010
TJ Kong - The centre of the world
TJ Kong - The centre of the world (Suelo remix)
TJ Kong & Modular K - Venusberg
TJ Kong - Ahhh!!!
Four:Twenty delivers its first release of 2010 in ‘Serenade’, an EP from Compost mainstay TJ Kong, aka Erwin Van Moll.
Van Moll’s output can be traced back as far as 1994 with releases as “Faceless Techno Bastards” and his own name, but it’s his sublime take on deep house for Compost as TJ Kong which has garnered the most attention, and for good reason.
Here, on the ‘Serenade’ EP, the listener is treated to three original cuts and a remix from the hotly tipped Suelo, and none of them fall short of excellent.
A simple kick and snare intro announces ‘The Centre of The World’ before the track gently builds towards a smooth, sine wave produced melody. Steadily joined by filtered keys and flowing strings, this is emotive deep house at its finest.
Seulo’s interpretation of “The Centre of The World” takes a stripped NY approach – all kick drum and tension, but when it drops into the original’s keys via some nifty filter work and vocal adlibs, it’s equally as warm and charming. A fine example of respectful, carefully judged remixing, in short.
Modular K is the invited collaborator on ‘Venusberg’, an elaborate and disco infused piece of classic house which could thaw the most cynical of dancefloors with it’s cheering builds and excellent melodies.
Finally, ‘Ahhh’ completes the package and rounds things off brilliantly by simultaneously providing the smile inducing nature of its counterparts and a slightly more introspective, heads down feel.
The perfect Spring release, TJ Kong’s “Serenade EP” is released in Feb 2010 on Four:Twenty.
GLIMPSE - Music:03 Out Now at Beatport!
Bristol’s Four:Twenty, imprint deliver one of their “Music” label compilations early 2010, this time featuring a selection of the labels brilliant catalogue compiled, mixed and re-edited by Glimpse.
Christopher Spero, aka Glimpse, had an exceptional 2009 with releases gracing Planet E, Cadenza, Kindisch, Buzzin Fly and his own Glimpse Recordings as well as his heavily supported single for FourTwenty so was first choice to handle the British imprint’s 3rd compilation.
FourTwenty itself hasn’t had a bad run, either. Releases featuring the likes of Solomun, Locodice, Andomat3000, Class71 and Two Armadillos have seen the label establish itself as one of the leading lights of forward thinking, dancefloor house.
The mix clocks in at 59 minutes and features some of the true highlights of Four:Twenty’s 50 release history. A staggering 27 tracks are combined into a subtle, moving and delicately driving mix which not only shows off the label, but mixer Glimpse’s deft skill in the studio and behind the decks. Each track has been lovingly edited and segued, and has been done with respect and musical understanding.
The likes of Move D, Lauhaus and Luna City Express rub shoulders with FourTwenty-unearthed gems such as Cherry, Mowbray & Sullivan and Suelo (who stands with the unreleased “One Week”) in a mix which sums up FourTwenty wonderfully.
‘Chris is fast becoming known as one of the best young producers out there, he oozes class and his knowledge of all things musical is sublime I wanted Chris to choose tracks from the label and re-interpret them in a 60 min mix, i think he's managed to capature the essence of the label showcasing some of the great releases we've enjoyed whilst managing to put his own unique stamp on, he's delivered something pretty special'
