| About The Drop Squad |
|
Dan "Hands" Ryan was born in Wellington, New Zealand and moved to DC with his family when he was 7 as a diplomat-brat. Growing up he was first exposed to Bob Marley and Talking Heads by his father, however his tastes shifted to jazz as soon as he picked up the upright bass at age 12. Studying with local bassists Jeff Cooper and the late Keter Betts, Dan developed an ear for straight ahead jazz. Dan was a member of the Maryland All-State Symphonic Orchestras and Jazz Ensemble, as well as the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra and (MCYO) and all-county jazz ensemble. After graduating from Walt Whitman High School in 2001, Dan went on to Princeton University to pursue a degree in music. While under the direction of Professor Tony Branker at Princeton, Dan immersed himself in hard bop and free jazz (a la Charles Mingus and the Miles Davis Quintet). After teaching himself the electric bass he soon became obsessed with Jaco Pastorius and Fusion in general. Dan graduated in 2005 with a degree in economics and music and now lives in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC. Currently Dan is musical director of and The Drop Squad, a mix tape hip hop/soul project out of DC; Dan also plays electric bass for Analog Jetpack, a high energy power trio; and Le Loup, a 7 piece Indy outfit; Dan is eager to get back onto the DC hip-hop/jazz scene and is interested in meeting local musicians of all styles. Contact dan.paul.ryan@gmail.com for any and all inquiries. Peace.
