RESPIRI / BREATHS is a concept born from the homonym video production started in 2004 by the contemporary artist Francesco Arena (Genoa, Italy).
This series belongs to his last work-in-progress video production focusing on the obsession related to communication between people and their deeper emotions.
The project features an international line-up mixing the bi-coloured visions of faces breathing behind a glass to the sounds coming from different experiences from the electronic/experimental/ambient and contemporary music, and the site-specific movement of dancing bodies who are giving expression to the feelings living inside the video-projections.
RESPIRI / BREATHS è un concept nato dall’omonima produzione video avviata nel 2004 dall’artista contemporaneo genovese Francesco Arena.
La serie appartiene al suo ultimo ciclo di produzione video in progress che esprime l’esigenza di dare corpo ad un’ossessione legata alla comunicazione tra gli individui, ai loro stati emotivi più profondi.
Il progetto presenta una line-up internazionale che unisce le visioni bicromatiche di volti respiranti dietro un vetro, a suoni provenienti dalle diverse esperienze della musica elettronica / sperimentale / ambient e contemporanea, al movimento site-specific di corpi danzanti che rendono carne viva gli stati d’animo costretti nelle videoproiezioni.

An artist uses the video language to portray twenty-three faces, each one standing in front of the still, impassive and clinical camera eye. Without any effect, but the bicromatic light where various red and yellow shades record different states of mind. Hidden. Obvious. Fake. Real. It doesn't matter.
Twenty-three sound designers from different countries in the world, from Japan to the United States, from Germany to Italy, from Poland to Holland, with their own unique and in many cases internationally recognised music style, offer their soundtrack dedicated and constructed on the vision of the individual video from which they have been inspired.

Un artista usa il mezzo video per ritrarre ventitrè singoli volti che si alternano davanti alla videocamera immobile, impassibile, clinica, senza effetto alcuno se non una luce bicromatica dove svariate sfumature di rosso e giallo registrano svariati stati d'animo. Nascosti. Evidenti. Finti. Reali. Non importa.
Ventitrè sound designers provenienti da diversi paesi nel mondo, dal Giappone all'America, dalla Germania all'Italia, dalla Polonia all'Olanda, con percorsi musicali originali e in molti casi internazionalmente riconosciuti, regalano altrettante colonne sonore inedite, ognuna dedicata e costruita sulla visione del singolo video dal quale sono ispirati.

In a common daily action, a series of *girls and boys mouths are breathing in front of a video camera, with no sound, to represent the gap between the physical being and the abstraction of its representation: without sound the characters gasp, like fish in the water, an anxious research of communication’s metaphor.
Those mouths, those pieces of videos, are videorecorded with a fixed shot in front of a glass sheet; the shot is symmetric; the face, lighted up by a red light, covers half of the screen and it opposes to a background of very saturated yellow.
The mouths breath for 45 minutes and the performance shows something very different from a physical need: insecurities and hidden emotivity.
It is performed live, without soundtrack, the pieces of faces seem to suffer a halting as if they move in apnoea, in a space emptied of its physical connotations, as if it were an abstract situation, a communicative need; the lips try to go out, beyond that space which brakes them but, obviously they can’t and twist themselves, they flatten against the glass sheet.
The breathing becomes a way to measure emotions and it helps to reveal the complicity with the videocamera, the only way of recording without stopping this work-in-progress process: both mirror and interlocutor of itself.

23 subjects (12 male and 11 female) were chosen from this first work stadium, and thus presented one by one as single videos, each lasting 15 minutes. These characters represent the structure of the whole project which can be presented in site-specific events, different solutions for every event.
From a single video-screening to a live performance with a body/performer or a video installation called "The Breaths' box", a room with 4 simultaneous videoprojections....
Nella concentrazione in un gesto banale quotidiano , una serie di *bocche di ragazze e ragazzi respirano davanti alla telecamera, senza audio alcuno, a sancire lo spiazzamento tra la fisicità dell’esserci e l’astrazione iconica della sua rappresentazione: senza suono i protagonisti boccheggiano, come i pesci nei bicchieri, tra le altre cose palese metafora di una ricerca ansimante di comunicazione.
Queste bocche, questi frammenti di video, vengono riprese ad inquadratura fissa davanti ad una lastra di vetro; l'inquadratura è simmetrica, il volto illuminato da una luce rossa occupa la metà dello schermo e si contrappone ad una campitura di giallo molto saturo che gli fa da sfondo.
Le bocche respirano per 45 minuti circa e in questa loro performance denunciano ben altro che un bisogno fisiologico: affiorano insicurezze ed emotività nascoste.
Il girato viene eseguito in live, senza colonna sonora, i frammenti di volto sembra subiscano un arresto quasi si muovessero in apnea, in uno spazio svuotato dalle sue connotazioni fisiche, come se si fosse ricreata una situazione astratta, un bisogno comunicativo; le labbra cercano a tratti di uscire, di oltrepassare quello spazio trasparente che le frena ma, ovviamente non riesco e si distorcono, si appiattiscono contro la superficie del vetro. Il respiro diventa strumento per misurare un emozione e aiuta lo svelamento, la complicità con la telecamera: unica a registrare senza fermarsi questo processo in progress, specchio e interlocutore del "se".

Da questo primo stadio di lavoro sono stati selezionati 23 soggetti, 12 maschili e 11 femminili presentati singolarmente in uno spaccato di 15 minuti ciascuno; questi rappresentano la serie portante e l’ossatura dell’intero progetto che si presenta con soluzioni site specific da verificare per ogni occasione…
Dalla semplice video-proiezione alla performance live con un corpo/danzatore fino ad arrivare a un’installazione video “Breaths’ Box” composta da un’ambiente chiuso e 4 proiezioni simultanee…
The sound structure includes the field recording, real sounds that in their transformation and slow evolution are reaching an image suspension and building a face metamorphosis during these long minutes of breaths.
While breathing, the subject is absorbed by his own presence/existence as he is closed in a trap revealing himself!
The sound is very precise/ well focused, in order to build and support the body movement while performing in the theatre. It seems to come out from the inner side of the body, to amplify on the outside.
In this way the work reaches an intimate level and focalizes on the breathing concept as a way to reveal our own presence.
There is a slow and deep evolution from the initial constraint to the final liberation and I believe it is mostly due to the feeling of the breathing subject who is forced to stay in front of this piece of glass while everything may happen. A portion of time to give voices to different emotions (suffering, constraint, abandonment to the pleasure of suffering, anger, eroticism…)
The beaten of a swift heart almost inhuman emphasizes the feelings that can explode!
You can finally hear the sound of a sighing voice coming out from the inside part of this breathing body…

La struttura sonora è composta da field recording, suoni reali che nella loro trasformazione e lenta evoluzione nel tempo creano una sospensione dell'immagine e sostengono la metamorfosi facciale che si può sviluppare durante questi lunghi minuti di respiro nei quali l'essere, si fà assorbire dalla propria presenza/esistenza chiuso una trappola rivelatrice del sè!
Il suono deve essere molto preciso/focale per quanto riguarda l'azione a teatro in modo da disegnare e sostenere il movimento del corpo.
E’ come se il suono uscisse dal corpo, arriva dall'interno e si amplifica verso l'esterno e non viceversa .
In questo modo diventa molto più intimo per un lavoro focalizzato sul concetto di respiro e di "riconoscenza della presenza del sé ".
C’è una lenta e profonda evoluzione di costrizione iniziale e liberazione finale e io credo che si rifà molto allo stato d'animo dei volti che respirano costretti a rimanere davanti a questa lastra di vetro dove può accadere di tutto nel cervello di quella persona in quei minuti. Può scattare un sentimento di (sofferenza - costrizione - abbandono al piacere della sofferenza - anullamento....rabbia...erotismo ).
Il battito di un cuore veloce quasi inumano interferisce e accentua questi stati d'animo che possono esplodere !
E infine questo suono che viene da lontano simile a canti sospirati è come se uscisse dall'interno del corpo di chi respira.

THE BREATHS' BOX
A video sculpture
The Breaths’box, a box full of emotions....the walls’ room become alive, big faces which are familiar in their traits, but thus not real, aliens, synthetic images with deep emotions we know very well as they belong to our inner life...
Respiri / Breaths can be presented also through a video sculpture called “BREATHS’ BOX”, a room of various dimensions (minimum 16 square meters) featuring inside simultaneous videoscreenings of a single video lasting 15 minutes or of a sequence featuring up to 4 hours (16 videos).
A room, a space with mobile walls, animated by faces of the series’ protagonists, a box to live in a full freedom, not only to watch, as an open sculpture, a journey inside ourselves whithin floating walls.
This solution requires 4 videoprojectors and a dvd player + 4 amplified stereo coffers in the structure’s corners. The sculpture can last from a 15 minutes’ loop up to the full lenght of the 23 videos’ sequence.

La stanza dei respiri, la scatola delle emozioni…le pareti si animano e diventano volti, volti enormi che ci sono familiari nei loro tratti e connotati ma che ci sembrano irreali, alieni, immagini sintetiche di emozioni calde e tangibili che conosciamo benissimo tutti e che ci appartengono…
Respiri / Breaths può essere anche “BREATHS’ BOX” una video scultura di dimensioni variabili concepita come un’ambiente di minimo 4 metri x 4 (16 mq.) all’interno del quale vengono proiettate simultaneamente le immagini di un unico video della durata di 15 minuti appunto, oppure una sequenza che può arrivare fino a 4 ore di proiezione continua (16 video).
Una stanza un’ambiente dalle pareti mobili, animate dai volti dei protagonisti della serie, una scatola da fruire in totale libertà come una scultura aperta da abitare e non da guardare, da vivere e non da ammirare, un viaggio dentro noi stessi racchiuso all’interno di 4 pareti fluttuanti e mobili.
Questa soluzione richiede l’utilizzo di 4 video proiettori e un lettore dvd + 4 casse di amplificazione sistemate agli angoli della struttura. La “durata” della scultura può appunto variare da un loop di 15 minuti ad uno di 5 ore e mezza massimo per una sequenza di tutti i video.

…with the aim of going beyond the barriers of the video bi-dimensionality to give a body to these breathing faces, to the flesh evocated by the red colour used in this apparently surrealistic set.
These “Breaths” become human through the movement of the dancers. They reach a body who is a tangible presence on the stage; image and life are comparing themselves in a distortion game where desires, fears and communication needs are living inside a fragile, strong, ironic, desperate, concentrated humanity.
Breathing, let people watching ourselves while breathing, it could be the more intimate action we can offer, as it is directly linked with our private existence.
A work born from a video-camera recording becomes meet and choreographic action.
From the lonely exclusiveness of the relation between subject and video-camera, to multiple relations connecting the subject of the video to real spectators and the way of enjoying the video-choreographic action by creating a mobile stratification of sense.
Accordingly, Respiri / Breaths will be applying different performance modules which can be used together or not, are adaptable to the various spaces and can be enjoyed in different situations.
The project can be presented with the following structures: from a single version (one screened video and one performer working on it with a duration of 15/20 minutes) to more complex loop-proposals featuring an alternation of subjects and performers, or the possibility to use different spaces / rooms / locations offering simultaneous site-specific Respiri/ Breaths shows.
Depending on the proposal and the location (relationship space / exclusiveness or possibility to choose the action to follow), the spectator will be urged to a critical and emotional participation, present and lost at the same time, as a fundamental element of the choreographic research of the company.

…nel desiderio di poter andare oltre le barriere della bi-dimensionalità, anche se monumentale a volte, di una video-proiezione per tentare di restituire ai frammenti di volti un corpo, quella carne che viene evocata, seppur trasfigurata, dai colori rossi di un’apparente surrealtà.
Attraverso il movimento dei danzatori i Respiri prendono forma umana, diventano parte di un corpo ricostituito grazie ad una presenza tangibile sulla scena; immagine e vita si confrontano in un gioco di distorsioni per lasciare spazio al confronto con i desideri, le paure, il bisogno di comunicare di un’umanità fragile, forte, ironica, disperata, assorta. Respirare, lasciarsi guardare respirare, può essere l’azione più intima da offrire, quella connaturata al nostro stesso esistere.
Un lavoro nato dalle telecamere si fa carne e azione coreografica.
Dall’esclusività solitaria del rapporto soggetto-telecamera ci si sposta verso una molteplicità di rapporti che coinvolgono soggetto video – soggetto reale - spettatore e il modo di fruire l’azione video-coreografica creando una mobile stratificazione di senso.
Da qui la necessità di proporre Respiri secondo moduli performativi differenti, cumulabili e non, che possano adattarsi alle diverse condizioni logistiche e ipotizzare differenti modi di fruizione.
Si parte dunque dalla versione più semplice (un solo Respiro e un solo interprete live per una sola durata modulare 15/20 minuti) a proposte più complesse che possono andare dalla ripetizione nell’arco di un tempo lungo della durata modulare con alternanza di soggetto e interprete, fino a coinvolgere ambienti diversi (più stanze anche di dimensioni differenti) e conseguentemente più Respiri e più interpreti.
A seconda della proposta e del luogo (rapporto distanza/vicinanza – molteplicità o esclusività della visione – possibilità o meno di scegliere quale azione seguire) il fruitore potrà quindi trovarsi ad essere sollecitato da attivare quella partecipazione critica ed emotiva, presente e smarrita al tempo stesso.
