About me: Thou canst not adorn thyself fine enough for thy friend; for thou shalt be unto him an arrow and a longing for the Superman.
My name is Rhys Balmer and among other things, i am a photographer and this is the myspace page i use to contact and network with people interested in my photography. I have a bachelors in fine art from the Pacific Northwest Collage of Art. I've been taking pictures for about ten years; I started taking snapshots in 1997, and have since moved on to shooting studio and location photography. At this point I'm more interested in pursuing my own creative muse than making money with photography; having said this i am always interested in new and challenging assignments so feel free to contact me but i am looking for subjects that share ether a cohesive aesthetic, personal disposition or assignments that offer serious compensation. I have shot a number of bands as well (Glass Candy, Get Hustle, The Magic Daggers, Behalf, Josh Hydeman, Red Bird, White Rainbow, Dark Yoga, Panther, The Road to Damascus, Crystal Castles, The Lonely H, Valet, Danava, DMBQ, Every Time I Die, and The Chromatics, To Live and Shave in LA...) and hope to work with bands more. My photos have been published in Wire, XLR8R, NME, Italian Vogue, and The Mercury. I think my strengths lie in my sense of style and my ability to adapt to different scenarios. A lot of my lighting is set up differently for different shoots, which gives my pictures a unique look and i build my own soft boxes. I improvise a lot. I have lots of plans and ideas for composition and so forth, but often something I could not have foreseen that the location or the subject brings will inspire me to change my approach at the last minute and the final product is better for it. My shoots are short, and I have had experienced models say I seem to value their input more than other photographers they work with. I will do trade for cd ("TFCD") if you are either pretty, strange, or if it seems we share some creative delusion however I do not deal well with flakes, my time is not free- it is carefully allotted to different outlets. DISCLAIMER: i am a fine art photographer. I have no intention of ever compromising myself and my art for money or recognition. Some people think that you have to be paid for the work you do to be valid. i do not agree, rather i conceder, for example, wedding photography, which can be quite lucrative, to be one of the lowest forms of photography and i would rather have a real job than prostitute my creative time and vision. The same goes for any commission work i do; if you want me to take photographs of you or your band it is because you like my style from looking at my portfolio and you trust me to know how to shoot but, do not however, expect me to take pictures any other way. i have found from experience that some people think that if they pay me i will take pictures the way they want, i take photos the way i want and that is what you see in my portfolio. it is not my job, or any photographers job, for that matter, to take pictures of the way you wish you looked. do not share your insecurities about the way you look with me i am not a therapist, plastic surgeon or a photoshop wizard. thank you for you interest.
