Set in an unnamed South American country ravaged by war and cholera, guerilla forces, led by the physically and psychologically scarred Cesar Guerrero (The Boogey-Man), have seized power from a barbaric dictator. A subterranean laboratory riddled with putrefying corpses is uncovered beneath the Presidential Palace. It was here that torturous human experiments and other atrocities were performed by Dr. Joseph Frankenstein.
With Guerrero in control of the government, he vows to sever all ties with his dark secrets and establish law and order in the country--only after exacting his revenge on Dr. Frankenstein. A bizarre love triangle emerges when both Guerrero and Frankenstein fall in love with Veronique, one of Frankenstein's greatest creations. Rounded out by an ensemble of strange and grotesque supporting characters, Frankenstein in Love is narrated by Maria, a ghost who was a fan-dancer, a palm-reader, and a prostitute in her previous life.
Frankenstein in Love is a macabre and graphic horror-romance done in the Grand Guignol style: intense depictions of violence drench the surreal, bleak tone of the story. Gothic sets and costumes, ghoulish makeup, and blood-curdling special effects are all part of the show. This is vintage Clive Barker: a provocative, taboo-shattering world that joins dreary atmosphere, frightening imagery, and gory horror with perverse humor, twisted romance, and even traces of compassion.
For the last 15 years, 20 Cent Fiction has been keeping the populace of UMass Dartmouth guessing over what we're all about and what we'll do next. An off-beat, student-run organization, we're perhaps known best for presenting The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Halloween. We generally do the darker, more eccentric kinds of productions. Past shows include Malice in Wonderland, Rope (the original inspiration for the Alfred Hitchcock classic), Frederick Knott's Wait Until Dark, The Who's Tommy, The Little Shop of Horrors, Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit, and Glengary Glen Ross.
Frankenstein in Love will be showing at 8PM from April 30-May 2, and 2PM on May 3, in the Campus Center Auditorium of UMass Dartmouth. UMass Dartmouth is located at 285 Old Westport Rd., North Dartmouth, MA 02747. Lot 4 is the best place to park.
