'This is a very addictive album: high-energy popabilly music stripped down to its most basic forms, without the added bells and whistles -- just an honest, emotional musical effort.'
Frankie 45 & Ben Martin CD review
Todd Maternowski / Pegasus News, Dallas, TX.
After three and a half years and more than 200 shows with Spector 45, guitarist / front man, Frankie 45, has taken a break to explore other avenues of Rock & Roll. He is joined by friend and multi-instrumentalist, Ben Martin on percussion. You may also know Ben as drummer for ‘the Delcos’ or remember him as guitarist for ‘Catch the People’. Their music together is distinctly different from all previous efforts by either player. Frankie says ‘I’ve been playing this stuff for years, it just didn’t fit in with what Spector was doing so it’s been on the back burner until now.’
Echoes of the 50's and 60's, revered throughout his career are still evident, but this time with a more authentic twist. The ‘greaser punk’ power and distortion is completely stripped away, opting instead for the low fi approach of childhood favorites Jonathan Richman and Mojo Nixon.
This music is not preconceived, preprogramed or computer generated, created only with true heartfelt emotion. From the rough-hewn vocals and harmonies to basic instrumentation it rarely gets more real than this.
This project came about on September 15, 2006, when Frankie was asked to play a press conference held by Dallas Mayor Laura Miller. The gig took place in a parking lot under Interstate 30 where she announced the new Deep Ellum shuttle bus. One third of his new band, the Delcos, was out of town so he and drummer Ben Martin improvised. While waiting for things to get underway, they were asked if they could also perform on the shuttle’s inaugural ride. Aware that even a basic snare drum would be precarious on a moving bus filled with VIP’s and cameras, they searched frantically for a way to meet this request. Within minutes a device was built consisting of a plastic cup duct taped into a small cardboard box that Ben could play with brushes.
Mayor Miller was so impressed with their performance she hired Frankie & Ben to play all evening giving the bus a true Deep Ellum feel. The purity of the music was so inspired and fun, the two practiced beyond the shuttle gig and well into the night. Two weeks later they took the mayors money, an acoustic guitar and the cardboard beat box into the Kitchen studios on Garland Road.

After last night's lecture, someone commented to me that I must be an army brat because I had such fantastic teeth. Such teeth, he said, could only be the result of good breeding and access to the finest dental care. I explained that though I descend from a long line of Bulgarian nobility, when I was a boy people were still having infected teeth removed by a donkey tied to a rope. Happenstance, I explained to him, is the main reason behind Mustafio's distinguished countenance.
Haha thanks man, that's cute. Sorry we didn't make it out the other night, I was all ready to go and Macey decided she was sick. Oh well, maybe another time.
