Carl Thomas, John Legend, Bilal, Maxwell, Eric Benet... my daddy! It's complicated!
He’s not just another son of a preacher man nor a church boy that found soul; he’s real, progressive and yet traditional in spirit while contemporary in action. Franklin IV, hailing from New Orleans, the most controversial city in U.S. history post 2005, is bringing his own eccentric flavor to the R&B-Soul music scene. With a vocal style that shadows the mellowness of Carl Thomas and the urgency of John Legend, Franklin adds that edge of curiosity to the pot creating an undeniably tasty roux that the folks of the Crescent City know as gumbo.
Franklin IV began singing as early as five in his father’s church next to the piano while his grandmother played “Swing Low.” By age eleven he was directing the children’s choir and writing his first songs, but it wasn’t until high school that singing and songwriting became his most important priority. After graduating from Dillard University with a bachelor’s degree in classical music, he completed his master’s degree in speech communication/public relations from Minnesota State University.
Houston, TX is where he made his new home post Hurricane Katrina working as a full-time publicist for local Houston talent and businesses. Franklin's talent resume credits include singing as a featured vocalist and background vocalist for/with Mary Griffin, Liz Vaughn, Gary Mayes and Nu Era, Andrea G. along with perfoming on the Red Cat Jazz Café's stage. While performing in the Houston area Franklin IV has had the opportunity to work closely with other artists such as Grammy award winner Gordon Chambers, Terisa Griffin, Saxophonists Stephen Richard and Earl Collins. Franklin IV is bringing a sense of spontaneity, charisma and intellectualism to audiences locally and abroad. “I’m a regular guy that’s trying to do my thing well; I’m not with all that extra stuff…,” Franklin IV mentioned in a recent interview with a New Orleans based publication. His wit and talent promises to be well received in coming years; as he loves to sing… feel good music.
