I love playing music with people that I admire. People like Jack Barber, Bob Arthur, former bass player for Boz Scaggs, George Rains, Drummer for many bands including Boz Scaggs, Doug Sahm, Jimmy Vaughn. I've worked with Sauce Gonzales, Rocky Morales, Al Gomez, Louie Bustos, Conrad Goethe, Tom Culpepper, Mando Almaraz and recently had the pleasure of playing with Donnie Price, bass player, at Chris Holzhaus' benefit at Sam's Burger joint. I could go on and on. My favorite local band right now is the The River City Catz. I worked with them a while and presently catch as many of their shows as I can. They play American/British Pop music. With four or more harmony parts at their command they do it very well, indeed.
Music
I love American Blues music. I grew up with blues in the juke joints of Kenwood. When young I hung out at the pool hall, the Joy Club, on Joy Street, Johnny Turner's on Main Street who had a great juke box with tunes by BB King, Johnny Otis, Jimmy Reed and Bobby Blue Band. I played my first gigs at the Cool Grove. The Cool Grove had a great juke box as well and a great house band w/ the "Ponte Guitar" Band. Kenwood was an unusual neighborhood of Hispanics/mixed and African-Americans right next to the Olmos Park neighborhood which was just east of us. I was one of the mixed ones as my mom immigrated from Italy with me in tow. My father was a soldier in WW II and stationed in Southern Italy. He met my mother there, fell in love and married her. She had me and when I was old enough to travel we came to Kenwood where my dad lived and where I was raised. My earliest recollections of music were from her. She knew lots of Southern Italian songs and she would sing them to us kids constantly.
Movies
I like Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy because it reminds me of my old neighborhood. Almost any black and white movie. My wife, Claire and I enjoy watching the old movies on TCM. Movies back then had suspence, beauty, mystery and meaning to them. I also love music dvds. My favorites right now are the Boz Scaggs live DVD and the history of the Funk Brothers. The Brothers had more hits than the Stones, Beatles, Elvis Presley etc. combined. They were the Motown band that never got the credit they deserved. That's why I mention them here.
Another favorite movie is the Godfather I and II because not only are they great movies but the music brings good memories of my mother who passed away in 1996.
Television
CNN, the History Channel, Military Channel, old movies on TCM, and documentaries.
Books
Great Expectations was the first book I read cover to cover thanks to my English teacher at Mark Twain Jr. High.
I read any and all books that I find an interest in especially, Alchemy, Philosophy, biographies, novels. When I was a kid I read the Encyclopedia Britanica from cover to cover along with the Bible.
Heroes
Jesus Christ! Jesus Macias, my dad and my mom, Anna Lettere Macias who left impoverished, war-torn Italy in 1946 to make a better life for her children in America. A true hero in her own right. Claire Macias, my lovely wife and my four talented kids Frank Jr. who lives in Australia, Michael, Yvonne, and Christopher. I love Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Bonnie Raitt, Elvin Bishop and Bob Dylan who taught me that you don't have to be African-American to play real blues. I thought it was an impossibility at worst and a sterile attempt at best. I found this was not so because of them. Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll are an original American music and is indigenous to all of us. It is in our soil, in our spirit, our soul and in our blood. Anyone can learn if they but take the time to do the research, the the work and lots of paying dues. I also love Robert Johnson, Boz Scaggs, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Hubert Sumlin and his protege Mike Bloomfield. I got to see the great Butterfield band, Charley Musselwhite, and the Steve Miller band when Boz Scaggs was on guitar in 1966 all in one night. I lived in the SF bay area between June 1966 and June 1968. I also caught a show at the Fillmore one night that featured the Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield on guitar, Albert King and BB King. Three monster guitar players in one night. All of them heroes of mine.
About me: Local San Antonio musician. I enjoy playing Americana with emphasis directed towards blues, classic country and rock and roll. I am presently working and concentrating on my own Blues CD. I am also putting a recording band together with Jack Barber on bass and as musical director. I hope to stay as a group after the CD is completed.
Until we establish a name for ourselves we will be called The Frank Macias Band. On 1/04/09 Augie Meyers came in to provide keyboards to 4 of the sides. Tonight the
Westside Horns, Al Gomez and Louie Bustos, will be by to add horns to some of the records. Check your local listings for I hope to be a giant, fun-filled record release party. Once the CD is complete I will change my site to the My Space Music site and post a sample of my music on it. Be on the lookout.
Please come out tonight to Sam's Burger Joint and Music Hall and catch the Frank Macias Band. Bring your instrument if you want to jam! Showtime is at 8:00 PM! Come by and see how the blues can be rocked!
Who I'd like to meet: People that love American music and would prefer to hear it live and lively.

You forgot.........happy birthday dear DADDY.....happy.......

Had a good gig last Wednesday at Sam's. The music was hot! Not too many people there though. It was cold..cold..cold.
My new band is really gelling. It was a very hypnotic set! I am ready to start opening for bands or having weekend gigs at Sam's which is what I want.
The Charlie Musselwhite Band we brought on a couple of Saturday's ago was really, really hot. We had a packed house at Sam's and Charlie signed my cheap old acoustic guitar. Charlie is almost 70 years but he was in fine form, as good as ever and had with a great band. Check him out if you get a chance.
