Influences
* Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Babyface and one of the hardest working women I know - Geraldine Hunt, my mother.
*Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan for their amazing work ethics and for always striving for perfection.
*My Grandmother for always having time to listen to my ideas no matter how weird they might have sounded and my son Jamal for his pure outlook on life.
Freddie was born in Chicago, Illinois (I love living here!) and grew up in a musical family - his great-grandmother had been a singer in Missouri, his grandfather made extra money doing a one-man-band hustle and, of course, his mother is Geraldine Hunt. Freddie also learned about singing from the heart while listening to his family singing in church choirs on Chicago's south side.
The Big Break
In 1975, Freddie moved with his family to a small town north of Montreal. His mother launched her own label, 6 A.M. Records, and after releasing some hits, she attracted the attention of producer/label owner, Tony Green. While Green was producing an album with his mom, Freddie was discovered. Green was already working with another talented teen in Quebec, France Joli, and was eager to continue the trend by signing Freddie to an exclusive recording contract. At just 14 years old, Freddie had a hit with Get Up And Boogie. His two subsequent singles, Hollywood and Crazy Disco Music were top 10 club successes.
Traveling the World
After releasing more singles, Freddie landed a role in the stage revival of the musical Hair which led to a part as "Flash" in the 1987 movie, Wild Things. Freddie and his younger sister Roz (whose group "Cheri" had enjoyed success in the early 1980s) formed a group and began touring the globe on invitations to perform in Japan, Africa, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia.
From the 1990s to Now
In 1993, Freddie teamed up once again with Tony Green to record the album Come Into the Jungle, which featured 12 tracks including the club hit, I Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love). The album featured collaborations with Star (scratching), rappers Zero Tolerance and background vocals by Geraldine Hunt, Maurice Williams and Michelle Sweeney. By the end of the decade, Freddie and Roz formed The Freddie James Project. The new band plays not only Freddie's disco hits, but a wide variety of covers and rock-oriented material as well.
Around the same time, Freddie kicked off a successful comedy career. After attending an open-mic night with a friend, he decided to give it a try and the next week, he did! Since then, Freddie has been in numerous comedy shows in well-known venues such as The Comedy Nest, The Comedy Works and the Canadian comedy chain Yuk Yuks. In 1999 he was picked to compete in the Just for Laughs Funniest East Coast Comic competition. In 2001, he was picked as one of the comics to perform at Club Soda during the Just for Laughs Festival.
Freddie, whether performing with The Freddie James Project or as a comedian, always delivers. Check the upcoming events section often so you don't miss out!
