"The hippest singer in town: bebop, ballads, blues, all spun afresh in a net of warmth and pleasure" [Edinburgh Jazz Festival]
Family background: Freddie's father was born in the Republic of Guinea and his mother was born in the Ukraine. He himself was born in London's East End and lived in Guinea as a boy.
Freddie has appeared in many jazz festivals across the UK as a bandleader or guest of a band.
He has played with many established jazz musicians, such as: Frank Perowsky (Lisa Minnelli), Bobby Wishart Band, Geoff Castle (Nucleus), Brian Kellock (Handful of Keys), Stan Robinson (Ronnie Scott group), Paul Flush (Keyboards), Demagogue Reacts (Belgian jazz group), Synthesis (US University Big Band), Tony Monaco (Hammond Organ), Frank Holder (Percussion/Vocal).
Having studied in New York with Mark Soskin (Sonny Rollins pianist), he has developed a particular personal vocal style consisting of ballads, swing, latin and bebop. His influences include such legendary names as Johnny Hartman, Nat King Cole, Mark Murphy, Eddie Jefferson, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis… to name but a few.
“I love to mix my material at gigs and enjoy scatting very much especially with horns in a jazz club but can also be mellow and laid back as in, for example, such numbers as ‘Some Other Time’, ‘Waltz For Debbie’, ‘Detour Ahead’ and many others”.
During the last two years Freddie King has travelled to Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, and New York, gigging in various jazz clubs, top hotels and cocktail bars performing the material of such names as Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine… thereby firmly establishing his reputation as a top international singer.
His release of his album DIGGIN’ DEEP received rave reviews by the music press. Selected tracks from his album can be heard her on his MySpace page.
