Fredrika Stahl was born on the 24th of October 1984 in Stockholm, Sweden. At four years old her family moved to Paris, in St. Germain en Laye, where she learned French and started classic dance and piano. At 12, back in Sweden to continue her studies in an English school, she began singing... more and more... at 17 years old, with her baccalaureate in hand, she decided to go back to Paris for one year so as not to lose her French and to attempt to set out on her musical adventure. In the evenings she worked in an English pub and it was there that she met GeeF of 3 CinkS Prod. Together they worked on her first album, A Fraction of You, which was arranged by Archie Shepp's pianist, Tom McClung.
Selling nearly 40,000 copies throughout the world, this first pop/jazz opus revealed her to the greater public as a singer-songwriter and composer with a clear and humble voice, having never taken any singing lessons. Performing live soon became her routine. She played in front of Herbie Hancock, Lionel Richie, Richard Bona, Ron Carter, JJ Milteau, Diane Reeves, Maceo Parker and The Brand New Heavies on stages such as the Olympia, the Enghein Casino, the New Morning, the Juan les Pins festival, and jazz festivals in Berlin and Tokyo.
Her second album, Tributaries, is still a mix of genres that pays homage to music itself. This is not surprising as she loves melodies and songs above all else, rendering borders meaningless. So she surrounded herself with a team from the four corners of the world, as if to illustrate her point, an Italian drummer, a Japanese pianist, a Norwegian guitarist and a Brazilian bassist. Together they concocted an album that invites the listener on a musical journey going from pop to reggae, stopping at jazz, blues and bossa. This time Fredrika's compositions were to be arranged on string and brass by Christian Martinez and she welcomed a brand new track offered by Mike Stoller of Jail House Rock and Hound Dog fame and Norman Gimbel who worked on The Girl from Ipanema and Killing Me Softly, an unexpected gift!
At 24 years old now, she only has two goals, to write and perform as much as possible. Her journey is only just beginning and 2009 will see the start of her first world tour.
