Bio
Fred Taylor is a drummer, percussionist, composer, and arranger, born in Spokane Washington in 1954. He has worked extensively nationwide as a leader, sideman, arranger, and producer in studios since 1970, working on singles, albums, and jingles, in nightclubs and in concert, in theater, and on radio. He's worked live TV in Seattle, Tacoma, Vancouver, B.C., and Minneapolis, and has appeared on film in travelogues and on film soundtracks. He spent several years traveling with various bands throughout the western and central U.S. and Canada from the early '70s to about 1980. From the '80s through the mid-2000s, he was very busy as a sideman in clubs, studios, and musicals in the Seattle-Tacoma-Everett area. During the 80s, Fred produced and/or performed on several singles and albums by the Cozzetti-Gemmill Band, Pete Leinonen, and Dingman-Duran, among others...In 1982, his album "Court of Circe" attracted international attention on the air and in magazines such as Down Beat and Cadence... In 2000, Fred and guitarist Gary Rollins re-created their 1970s-era jazz/fusion group 'Inquest'. Their first album, "Processional", was released in December 2006 and is attracting much favorable attention on the Web and in the jazz press... In 2008, Fred released 'Circling' with his New Jersey-based trio, consisting of Bob Ackerman on woodwinds and Rick Crane on bass. In 2009, the trio released a live CD recorded at Cecil's in West Orange, NJ. Both CDs have received extensive airplay and editorial notice. Another CD, with electric fusion bassist Francesco Beccaro filling in for Rick Crane, is due out in Spring of 2010... Since May 2007, he has been playing in the New York/New Jersey area with Pam Purvis and the Blue Skies Band. He has also performed with jazz/r&b group Dreams On Tour, country/rock pianist, singer and writer Hannah Reimann, Latin/jazz/fusion group Not-Yet, and jazz trumpeter Joey Morant, among many others... In addition to drum set, Fred plays congas, bongos, timbales, mallets, and tympani. Fred also plays keyboards, bass guitar, and double bass. He studied piano with Hans and Rosalyn Moldenhauer at the Spokane Conservatory; drums and percussion with Fred Hartley, Joe Field, and David Stetler; composition and arranging with Ralph Mutchler at Olympic College; and drumming and afro-cuban percussion with Kim Plainfield, Pat Petrillo, Vince Cherico, Fred Klatz, and Peter Retzlaff at the Drummer's Collective in New York... Fred uses Yamaha drums; K. Zildjian cymbals; DW hardware and pedals; Aquarian heads and Vic Firth sticks. -
