Zhiwen Wang was one of four volunteer contact persons of the Beijing Falun Dafa Association to be sentenced to a 16-year prison term when the persecution against Falun Gong began in 1999.
Falun Gong is a meditation practice, also known as Falun Dafa, and consists of five meditation exercises and is based on the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance. It originated in China in 1992, but has suffered an 8 year persecution at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. The practice has spread from China throughout the world to over 60 countries and approximately 100 million people are said to practice it.
