Free Agents Brass Band was formed in September 2005 by Ellis Joseph. It was shorlty after Hurricane Katrina displaced the entire city of New Orleans and its' culture that the Free Agents were born. Mr. Joseph was determined to return to his home town with as many New Orleanian musicians to bring back the culture. This is how the Free Agents began their crusade to preserve and promote the musical legacy of brass brand tradition.
Free Agents Brass Band line-up includes: bandleader and bass drummer Ellis Joseph; Julian Goslin on the trumpet; Keith "Wolf" Anderson on the trombone; John "Prince" Gilbert on the saxophone; Travis Carter on the sousaphone; and Floyd Gray on the snare drum. Free Agents also have a big brass band with a ten piece: Shannon Haynes and Chad Brown on trumpet; and Larry Brown and Tyrus Chapman on the trombone. This collection of New Orleans' living legends produces harmony with a combination of the old traditions with the new funk.
After watching their city drown, many New Orleanians relocated to Atlanta, Georgia were they would soon become desperate to hear jazz music and the second-lines they loved in their pre-Katrina New Orleans. “I consider myself a free agent, so that’s where the name comes from,” says leader, bass drummer Ellis “EJo” Joseph. “We were all trying to survive by making ends meet, but as musicians we longed for our music," says Ellis.
The Free Agents have earned the respect of the music community for their professionalism, sound, musicianship and performances that will have you jumping to your feet dancing. Band members of the Free Agents have performed with Rebirth, New Birth, Hot 8 Brass Band, Stooges, Soul Rebels, High Steppers, Pin Stripe, and Showtime Brass Bands. The music is live and intense and always brings an energy of bliss.
