Many books about the plight of the Burmese people under the military government are available in other countries: Living Silence, by Christina Fink; From the Land of the Green Ghosts, by Pascal Khoo Thwe; Fear and Sanctuary, by Hazel Lang; Burma: The Curse of Independence, by Shelby Tucker; A Land Without Evil: Stopping the Genocide of Burma's Karen People, by Benedict Rogers; Letters From Burma and Freedom From Fear and Other Writings, by Aung San Suu Kyi
About me: Burma, now called Myanmar by the government that has no right to rename it, has been under the oppressive rule of a military junta since 1962. In 1988, the Burmese people revolted and demanded democracy; though these uprisings were violently quashed, and thousands of innocent demonstrators lost their lives, they forced the government to hold elections for the first time in decades.
Those in power refused to honor the election results, and the people of Burma have since lived under an illegitimate regime that has depleted the country's resources, destroyed its culture, and undermined the spirit and creativity of its people. All ethnicities - Burman, Karen, Mon, Shan - suffer under the abused and abusive power of Than Shwe's government. We can regain our basic rights to free speech, freedom from fear of detention, forced labor, and torture, and rebuild our country into the prosperous nation it once was.
Who I'd like to meet: The people of Burma have the power to unite and demand change from their unauthorized leaders. The government is legally and morally bound to release Aung San Suu Kyi from imprisonment and hand power over to her rightfully elected National League for Democracy. Many groups in other countries support us, such as the US Campaign for Burma, the Free Burma Coalition, and the Burma Campaign UK. Click on their links to see how citizens around the world are prepared to stand behind the Burmese who will fight for their freedom.
Thanks for the add. I really like your page - keep on adding! There are so many people out there who aren't aware of what is happening in Burma. It's time for change!
