Hello, I am Ron Stark, caretaker of Freed Unit's 'myspace'. I am a 'Silver Surfer', that is to say, a person of advanced years and wisdom who uses the internet...
You can find a movie I shot with the band several years ago, on the video page of this site.
The Freed Unit have been making music since 1996, with the release of their 1st album 'Field Reports From Out-There', which managed to combine a folky, rural feeling, with what Jennifer Nine of Melody Maker referred to as 'retro-futurism'.
In 1998 came 'Things Are Looking Up.....' featuring singles 'Getting Used To Not Fitting In' and 'The City', as well as the very odd 'The Entropy Kids And St. John' amongst other classics.
In the same year, a mail-order only cd of instrumentals called 'Dayglo' was also released on the band's 'Out-There' label. The Freed Unit have used this imprint to release a collection of strange and extraordinary limited editions including the triangular 'Masonic Youth Ep', and the square-shaped 'Six-Sided Ep, (Gigglegoo Companion)', which as you may have guessed, was the companion for the album 'Gigglegoo' (released in 2000).
For a full discography, check out the band's website, www.freedunit.co.uk.
You might be interested to know that The Freed Unit have produced movies for many of their songs. Some can be found on the band's website, others on Youtube. Late last year the animation film for the song 'Winter Solstice' was released for you all to see and go "Ooooh, Aaaah", beside your crackling yule log. Early in '07 a film to accompany the unreleased song '17 Yrs Without Sleep' was uploaded onto Youtube. I will let you know when any others are due to be premiered.
LOVING your new download-single Winter Solstice. What a brilliant tune, this should be a Christmas number one, somewhat better than cliff richard (elvis presley, the beatles, madonna, take that, erm, x-factor things) any day! Is there a picture sleeve I can download? I can 'do' you one if ya like!
