Since its formation in 1996, FREEFUNK has been playing Japanese original funk. Original crew is Toshi Sakuratani (vocal & guitar), Gonzo (bass & vocal) and Uratch (drums). It was just like mixture of Band Of Gypsys and Early Funkadelc, gradually they got new crew, Horn players, keyboards, paersussions... By the end of 1998, They got 13 members on stage.
FREEFUNK has kept acting and playing aggressively. They started their own party named "FREEFUNK CONNECTION" since 2000. and introduced a lot of Japanese funk artists.
They released first album named as "FREEFUNK" from their own label in 2001, and it got great sales in major chain stores Tokyo. This first CD release was remarkable for all Japanese Funk fans.
Through some of the crew quit and change, FREEFUNK released second album titled "UNIVERSE, FUNK & LOVE" from UNIVERSAL IMS (an Independent distributor of Universal Music Group) in 2003, it was more P-FUNK oriented album.
Toshi respects Eddie Hazel. In this album, he dedicated instrumental song "Guitar Thang" for Eddie. Gonzo respects Bootsy Collins, Uracth respects Jerome Brailey... Thus, they and they came to be seemd as "Japanese P-Funk". They got the highest praise and support from the original members of P-FUNK. (see above)
After the release of 2nd album, FREEFUNK plays a lot of show and working for compilation CD "FUNK YOUR STYLE " collaborating with Japanese Hip Hop artists.
And finally, they are planning to release long-awaited new album named "FUNKNOLOGY" in July, 2006!! Keep it in you mind, thy will make you free, they make you funk!!
