Free Keys is a Progressive-Rock Trio from Tehran. Formed under a government that has banned western music, the members knew that in order to play music for a living, which is the only way they'd want it, they have to leave their country.
In Summer 07, 9 months after the band was formed, Free Keys teamed up with Sister Indie Quartet, The Yellow Dogs, to throw a couple of underground shows. They transformed the parking garage that was their rehearsal space into a venue and sound-proofed the area all by themselves. But the hard part was yet to come, as throwing a Rock show in Iran is against the law. It's a minor crime but people have been arrested and jailed before. In fact, a week before their debut gig in their self-made venue, a concert in the outskirts of Tehran got raided by the police and the performers were jailed. This was awful news for the two bands who have just spent more than 1000 bucks and two months of hard work preparing the venue.
Instead of canceling their plans though, the guys decided to keep the gigs low-key. In the end, they sold a total of 200 tickets for two shows, which may not seem like a lot but given the situation, the capacity of the venue and the fact that the shows stayed off-radar, is pretty impressive.
The guys have been trying to get out of the country ever since. Arya is already residing in the UK, waiting for Arash and Pooya to get their military service done and their visas sorted out. Meanwhile the guys exchange riffs and ideas through email and that's how they make music and keep up with the world, while being in different continents.
Musically, Free Keys is influenced by countless artists, the most easily recognizable ones being King Crimson, Tool, Ozric Tentacles and The Mars Volta.
Their untitled demo CD, recorded on winter 07 but never officially released, was sent to various festivals
and competitions, winning them opportunities to play shows in England, Netherlands and America but they couldn't make it to any of them due to (guess what?) visa and military service issues.
