Freelance Whales found one another in late 2008, in Queens, amidst a strange amalgam of unfamiliar instruments, and precariously arranged pop songs. Using whatever musical gadgets they happened upon (mostly harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums, waterphone), the five members worked at crafting songs with interlocking rhythmic patterns, lush textural layering, and an engaged group-vocal energy. The result is their debut LP, weathervanes, whose songs work at evoking a sense of dislocation, or sensory disorientation. They invite the human spirit to exit the body, if only for brief moments. Freelance Whales can be spotted in the streets and humble venues of New York City, and in due time, elsewhere.
"Freelance Whales have managed to channel something eerie, dreamlike, and seemingly autonomous – the sum of the players being much more than each individual part" - Mark Steffen, HEAVEmedia
"Amazingly, Freelance Whales are even more arresting live than they are on record. They exhibit the exuberance of a young band that feels lucky to be sharing ideas with their audience" - Leo Maymind, Earfarm
"It just doesn’t feel like kids we grew up with should be this free, so we figure this five-piece has been transported from some alternate universe or simpler time when being gleeful was more important than anything else." - RCRD LBL
"It's awash with gentle, naive bliss, and if you're the type that likes to observe hooks blossoming with the pace of an actual flower opening, then you might have just found a new favourite band." - NME
..A friend recommended me to you, and boy was I impressed. Awesome awesome music, keep it up, I noticed unfortunately your coming American tour does not include a stop in Detroit. Should be remedied sometime as I would love to see you guys live. Keep up the good work though.
That's really exciting. Can't wait to see you guys live. If you need any opening bands around GA, be sure to keep us in mind! If you are interested or would like any help in general, shoot me an e-mail. Adlucemband@gmail.com

i see you are coming to philly again. this will be the fourth time i'm going to miss seeing you all. please please please please play a philly venue that isn't eighteen or twenty one and up!!! it's killed me i haven't been able to go, and i know quite a few people my age that would do anything to see you play.
We’re a rock & roll band from Dundee in Scotland and we thought we’d drop you a line because as of March we’ll all be in the same proverbial boat: traversing the various venues on 6th Street and more than likely staring at some bats under the bridge! We’re coming out there to do as much as possible and meet as many like-minded people as we can so, whenever you’ve got any spare time maybe it would be good to grab some ribs and/or a beer or two?
I'm in New York City for the first time in my life and I can't believe that everytime I find out about a Freelance Whales concert it's already sold out! I'm going back to brazil in june and I better have seen you guys live. Please play in NYC more often! :)
..Hello there && Thanks for adding meh :) I stumbled upon an article about your band on the Elle website, and had to check you out. I'm in love! Hoping you'll be out west sometime soon! peace&love<3
