...While the whole world chokes back a sub-prime-rib sandwich, holding its breath and waiting on the bailout trickledown… grains grow scarce, floodwaters rise, and wildfires burn out of control… the world’s finest research doctors race against time to cure limp dinks, love handles and male pattern baldness… the western world gorges itself on the last of the buffet … a beat drops… Lee Reed rips a microphone from its stand and tells it like it is. Best known as the incendiary mouthpiece for the legendary Warsawpack, Lee Reed (or Lee Raback in the world of punch clocks and paycheques) is no newcomer to the Canadian indie music scene. From 1999-2004, his band packed clubs from coast to coast - soaking in media spotlight, critical acclaim, and capturing awards, accolades and applause at every stop. Five years after the Pack’s demise Reed has surfaced from the bunker – older, wiser and more crotchety – independently releasing his first solo EP “Introductory Offer” to much local Steel City love… taking the 1 spot on C101 and CFMU charts, and holding the title for 6 consecutive weeks at CFMU. In the following month, without a single mail-out, press release or phone call, the EP stealth bombs its way to 30 on the !Earshot Top 50, making it the nation’s highest ranked independent release of that week(MAR 17, 2009). His mom is proud. CSIS opens a new case file and dispatches some agents. Reed’s Indie music rap sheet is thick… he has shared the stage with some serious industry heavyweights: Del the Funkee Homo-Sapien, Saul Williams, Roots Manuva, Bad Religion, The Constantines, Fishbone, Alexisonfire, DJ Krush, Sadat X, Scratch from the Roots, Edan, Buck 65, Cadence Weapon, K-OS, Moneen, Death From Above, DJ Vadim, and a whack of other big name artists that will forever wonder what became of their backstage booze and snack table … he has had media features/interviews on the Much New Music, CBC Radio 3, CBC’s ZedTV, the Edge 102.1, Exclaim, The Georgia Straight, Eye, Now, and every other self-respecting free weekly and student newspaper from Halifax to Vancouver Island… and he has spewed his anarcho-communist weed scented beer breath at packed clubs across the nation, with headlining spots at NXNE, CMW, Hillside Festival, Montreal Pop, Halifax Pop, Under the Volcano… and won a pile of awards, plaques and trophies including 2003 Canadian Music Week’s Urban Artists of the Year. In 2009 Reed has returned to claim his rightful place as one of Canada’s premier voices of dissent… its insurgent laureate… Dropping nothing but the most intelligent and subversive lyricism… Lee continues to agitate, criticize, and belittle mainstream politics and culture, speaking truth and justice in the most offensive ways possible, flying a fat middle finger at warmongers and capitalists everywhere, upsetting traditionalists, closet-racists, bible-thumpers, conservatives and anyone stupid enough to eat at McDonalds… always on beat…and in 4/4 time.
