Free Peace are - as you might expect - a 'three-piece' from Liverpool formed in August 2008 by local music maverick Edgar Jones - who writes, sings and plays bass. On drums is Edgar's nephew Nick Miniski and Stuart Gimblett plays guitar.
Edgar decided to call it a day on the seven-piece jazzy r'n'b outfit The Joneses and invent something a lot 'leaner and louder'. He called upon the services of Nick and Stu - two talented young musicians who had previously played together in a Liverpool band The Pedantics. Nick had also done an eighteen month stint in The La's.
Their sound is loud and heavy but contains a lot of soul. Led Zeppelin is a definite influence but The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Southern soul sound of New Orleans also form an important part of the mix. Like the great rock bands of the late 60s Free Peace is all about respecting the traditions of jazz, r'n'b and soul music, something which Edgar feels that a lot of modern bands just don't do.
The band have caught the eye of one Noel Gallagher, who personally selected them to support Oasis on their European tour in February '09. Oasis were blown away by Free Peace's live performances in Europe and have invited them to support them again at their huge Summer shows in the UK. Noel has commented that watching Free Peace live was "...like new Year's Eve 1969 all over again....brilliant.."
Edgar himself has already become something of a legend of the Liverpool music scene. In the nineties his psych garage band The Stairs gave us cult classics such as 'Weed Bus' and his unique style has undoubtedly been an influence for many of the later bands to come out of Liverpool. He has worked with the biggest names in music; Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Ian McCulloch, Lee Mavers to name but a few.
Free Peace's debut e.p. is available at http://www.lousoul.co.uk
They are currently recording their debut album "Born Too Loose" due for release Autumn '09 on Loud Soul records
