Freeplay Dance Crew's Interests
General
Making and finding beats, and dancing to them!
Music
Sure, FDC is primarily a hip hop group, but we're inspired by all forms of music and we strive to push our boundaries and exceed our audience's expectations. If it moves us, we move to it!
Freeplay Dance Crew (FDC) was established in 2000 by hip hop instructors Joshua Klipp and Jonathan de Lima to provide adults the opportunity to be a part of a working, dedicated dance company. Over the years, FDC has been home to dozens of diverse, multi-talented company members. Based out of San Francisco's Embarcadero YMCA, the group is a 100% volunteer organization that regularly donates its performances to raise funds for programs such as Dance Mission, the Jon Sims Center for the Arts, the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco, and the Nevada Theater Company.
FDC is well known locally, having performed at the San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest and other Bay Area events such as the San Francisco Pride Festival. In addition, FDC has produced three benefit dance events: two for youth organizations Youth Speaks and the Mercy High School Performing Arts Program and one in conjunction with the Embarcadero YMCA to benefit the YMCA of USA Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. In March of 2007, FDC teamed up with the acclaimed Sarah Bush Dance Project to present an original full-length production titled "L1FE: mine. yours. ours." which ran for three sold out nights at Dance Mission Theatre. The group are now working on their next original program, "Inside Out: The Story of Freeplay Dance Crew", which will premier at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in June of 2008.
Under the Direction of Janey Madamba and Creative Direction of Joshua Klipp, everything from choreography and costume design to booking and promotions is entirely the result of volunteer efforts by FDC’s talented and devoted dancers.
Who I'd like to meet: Freeplay Dance Crew (FDC) and Oakland based filmmaker Oriana Bolden of proj-ectPRO:JECT will present an original production, Inside Out, at SomArts Theatre, San Francisco, CA.
Performed by an ensemble cast, “Inside Out: the story of Freeplay Dance Crew” is an energetic multi-media collaboration that fuses elements of spoken word, hip-hop dance, documentary, video projection and an exciting musical score. This soulful journey of music, movement and video interweaves company members' personal tales of sexuality and gender to tell the story of the dance crew’s dynamic ten-year history.
This inspiring autobiographical program explores the group’s own experiences with diversity, expectations, conflict, and identity. Through movement, documentary-esque interviews, video and thematic imagery, the dancers’ paths intertwine as they guide one another toward acceptance and celebration. Each narrative focuses on how being part of FDC and its unique community, has impacted its members’ lives and ideas of sexual orientation and gender roles.
Inside Out: the story of Freeplay Dance Crew, is a collaboration of storytelling from FDC’s company members, filmmaker Oriana Bolden of proj-ectPRO:JECT, guest choreographers Sarah Bush of Sarah Bush Dance Project, and Lee Pazmino of Funk4Soul.
Audiences will witness how this unique and diverse dance company evolves, breathes and grows to become an exploration of the dancers, their collective experiences, and the threads of community that this story creates.
