DDog
DDog is 'The Doggfather' of Drum and Bass in Wellington. When he's not wyling out to the latest UGK or watching Katt Williams DVD's, DDog runs some of the best Drum and Bass parties in the southern hemisphere under the Bass Frontiers banner. Over the last few years DDog has taken center stage as a warm up DJ for some of the biggest acts to hit Wellington and knows exactly how to cater to his demographic. Initially leaning more towards spinning classic party Hip-Hop and 'tear your head off' Crunk at FCSS, these days you can find DDog combining it with the freshest B-more, Ghetto House and Fidgit to create pure jump up party vibes.
Kava
Kava cut his teeth spinning on student radio in Palmerston North, then relocated to Wellington and got the fuck down with drum and bass and broken beat as a member of Bass Frontiers. Late 2002 Kava was accepted in the Red Bull Music Academy and graduated with honors. Now known for his Future Soul, Wonky Hop and Brazilian Beat dj business, Kava has recently been handcrafting some tasty MPC driven beatscapes.
Don't put him in a box though, Kava can come with some serious club music when and as required, and continues to defy genre with his vibes driven selections
Marek
Marek is into sneakers, caps, jackets and designer jeans. He's kicked it on a social or business level with David Banner, De La Soul and the rest of your i-tunes playlist over a few quiet brews or a pot of old English tea in London or LA. Marek holds the fuck down as the resident weekend DJ at Good Luck Bar in Wellington, and is sponsored by W.E.S.C; so you know he stays dipped. He's also the official New Zealand VICE magazine DJ and has played with everyone, everywhere. Right now Marek's all about club tempo dance music, so he's thrashing a lot of Bmore, Bassline and Favela Funk. Don't get it twisted though, you'll still hear some Ice T up in this bitch when the shots are right.
Between them, FCSS have over twenty years combined radio dj/host experience on Active89fm's 'Future Funk' and 'Friday Night Flava' specialist music shows.
Philadelphia had its day with Hollertronix, and in Wellington City the spirit of extreme buck wild party vibes lives on with Fried Chicken Sound System (aka FCSS), a party where you're guaranteed to hear your favourite tunes, discover some new favourite tunes and worst case scenario wake up the next day in a bus shelter with no recollection of your night out.
Formed in 2003 by DDog and Kava, FCSS set to sea with a short stint at Watkins Bar, then sailed through Curve Bar and Sandwiches Nightclub, picking up an extra ship-hand called Marek along the way before dropping anchor at Cuba Street's Good Luck bar, where the party exploded into monster with a reputation for lines of punters cuing around the block.
Grounded in classic party Hip-Hop, the FCSS navy originally specialised in different areas of music and dj approaches. Over time though, as the party musically traversed Dancehall, Bmore, Electro, Bassline and Favela Funk, DDog, Kava and Marek's collective musical vision become shared and concise.
As an equation, FCSS equals four to the floor club music with strong Hip-Hop, Crunk and Mashup undertones; or as we in the industry fondly refer to it – The motherfuckin jumpoff!
These days FCSS are patched up with Red Bull, Vice Magazine, Jagermeister, Good as Gold, W.E.S.C and Neon Sleep, and regularly tear up nightclubs outside of Wellington in Auckland, Wanaka and Queenstown.
Looking to take their stage and lighting show to the next level, FCSS recently began holding parties at Wellington's San Francisco Bath House, pulling 400+ to their last audio visual extravaganza.
Drawing influences from the likes of The Wu-Tang Clan, Cash Money Records, DJ Skitz & Rodney P, The Scratch Perverts, Diplo and Fool's Gold Records, FCSS deliver one of the most untouchable and internationally current 'party vibes' club experiences in New Zealand, and they want to see you at the bar at their next party.
