Friendly Yen came together in 2006 after 13 years of not collaborating. Two of the trio lived next door to each other for all this time and never once played music together, despite both being of the musical cloth. Paying tribute to their idols through their songs, Friendly Yen combine soft grooves with subtle lashings of reggae, placing a heavy emphasis on vocal melody - often described as ‘a ruckus of scruff’.
The Friendlies are fronted by Jeff Hann, who has been described by critics as ‘the instigator of intricate vocal runs with perfect pitch’ and also considered one of Canberra’s best kept secrets by his peers. They have found their groove performing at most of the town’s musical gatherings and venues, including the Corinbank Festival and Backyard Backanlia, as well as taking their flavour up and down the musical corridors of the East coast supporting the likes of Casual Projects, Karton, and Yves Klein Blue.
The Wild Things EP was crafted at the height of the 2008 summer and seduced onto tape at the charming Bullseye Studios in Chifley. With Cameo appearances by the rhythm section of Casual Projects, the music emits a brightness that weaves harmoniously through each instrument and peaks at the lusty vocals from Jeff. The production was kindly undertaken by Canberra’s premiere producer duo Karton, and in the spirit of keeping it local, mastered by KV productions.
The Friendly Yen EP will be officially released in November 2008 and will be followed by a fairly friendly touring schedule.
After careful planning, the boys were announced as the recipients of an ARTSACT grant and will be heading into the studio again during the Year of the Ox (2009) so stay tuned….
