Benefit for Ed Ruiz in New Bern

Ed Ruiz, founder and proprietor of Trent River Coffee Company in New Bern, has been diagnosed with colon cancer. TRCC, and Ed, are real institutions in the local art scene. TRCC has hosted performances of acoustic, folk, and alternative music, as well readings and meetings of theater groups, poets, etc. since 1993.
Ed has exhibited and sold the work of local visual artists on his walls. Ed has also performed as a regular member of such local bands as the Delta Bones, Jen & Tonic, and Toxic Gumbo.
To raise money to support Ed in this difficult time, several local musicians and friends are organizing a “Benefit for Ed” on Sunday, February 15.

Local bands will be performing at this event. Confirmed bands include:
Breck Jarman’s Opry Band (classic Country and Gospel revue)
Tuppence (acoustic folk)
ChrisAnnDale (variety trio guitar-flute-bass)
In the Pocket (Folk-Rock-Jazz-Fusion)
Silver Spire (acoustic Celtic, Americana, and Gospel)
The RetroRockets (Vintage Rock & Roll of the “tailfin era”)
Hot Buttered Grits (Southern Fried Electric ‘Grass)
Collateral Damage (Rock, Blues, Jazz, Boogie and more)
The Hanging Chads (Progressive Jazz)
Jen & Tonic (Classic Soul, Blues, and Contemporary Songs)

Additional bands are anticipated to join the line-up for this event, which promises to be a “who’s who” of local entertainment. Besides the music, there will be a raffle, some refreshments for sale, and a silent auction of donated items.

The Benefit for Ed will be held at the Masonic Theater, at 516 Hancock Street in downtown New Bern. The event will start at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $10 (children $5), available at the door. For further information, to make arrangements to perform, or to donate items for the auction, contact Simon Spalding at 252-636-1256 or at fullersteaching@yahoo.com. Check out the event website at www.myspace.com/friendsofed.

ChrisAnnDale returns to the New Bern music scene on Friday August 21, 2009 with a 7:00 pm Benefit Concert at Trent River Coffee Company, located at 208 Craven St., New Bern, NC.

The trio - comprised of Dale Maxey on guitar, Ann Courtney on flute, and Chris

Kling on bass guitar - plays a wide variety of music from the 1940's through the

1960's, crossing genres from big band, pop, classic country and 1960's rock.

Admission to the show is three items of canned or non-perishable food, or a new

child's toy, which will all be donated to Religious Community Services. As

reported by the New Bern Sun Journal in a July article, RCS "supports several

different ministries all aimed at helping the needy. Its soup kitchen is open

weekdays for lunch, and a pantry and nearby clothing area are both stocked for

families."

ChrisAnnDale recognized both a need to step up and support the efforts of RCS in

helping their Craven County neighbors - and their own unique position of being

able to do something to help the cause.

ChrisAnnDale can be found - and their music sampled - on the web at

AAAAHAHAHAHAAAHHAHAHAHAAAAAAHHHHH!!
Words cannot describe the blessing New Bern has received in the name of our friend, businessman, and fellow musician Ed Ruiz.
Only a caring community can pull off what happened here in New Bern yesterday!
Please read this article from the New Bern Sun Journal:
http://www. newbernsj. com/news/ruiz_44014___article. html/people_new. html
At the preliminary count in theatre the bands and volunteers had raised well over 10k for Ed and his family via ticket sales, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction (a Fender Nashville Tele was donated for auction!). We had a sold out crowd that caused the event, unfortunately, to have to turn away people at the door. The theatre was PACKED….
It was nice to have a back stage pass!
I was not able to catch WCTI-12 yet, if they have run a story, they had reporters on scene as well. If anyone gets that footage let me know.

I believe Dale (http://www. datgeek. net/ ) was recording, as well as Patrick on multi-track.
Hopefully we will be seeing a CD for sale soon!!
Our great friend James ( http://www. myspace. com/jlg4880 ) was also on site with his trusty cameras. ....
Thanks to everyone who put forth good thoughts and prayers on this event….. it was a huge success!!

Alas and alack, I must report that the RetroRockets and ChrisAnnDale must withdraw from the show due to unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances, but their thoughts and prayers will be with Ed and with all of the rest of the "Friends of Ed".

The poll!

1. Do you like coffee? Not so much, but I love cappuccinos and gritty kitties :)
2. Do you dream? Everyone does.
3. What is you favorite thing to order at TRCC? I always always always ordered a gritty kitty!
4. Have you ever sang a song, played an instrument, or said a poem at TRCC? I have played the piano on my own time only once, for no audience - but I've seen my dad play there :)
5. Have you ever dreamed about a bald guy, with a beard, who makes coffee? Actually, I did once, only it was more of a daydream. I wanted to go to TRCC in my dress and see Ed and get a picture of us after my hubby and I got married, and to have one last Gritty Kitty before we flew out, but we didn't get to NB until late. :( I regret not stopping by before I left now. Ed, you better be there when I come home next year! :)
6. Have you ever had a Gritty Kitty? That's all I ever ordered, haha.
7. Has Ed EVER told you a joke? Of course!
8. What color is Ed's eyes? I quite unfortunately can not remember :( I want to say blueish grey, like mine. But I'm probably wrong.
9. If you're flying over the ocean in a canoe and wheel falls off, how many of Ed's bagels can you fit in a dog house if a cat lives there? Hahaha not many, those bagles are HUGE!
10. Have you ever hugged the Ed man? No, I haven't, but I would given the opportunity if it didn't weird him out.
11. Has Ed ever given you something for free? He has.
12. What did Ed give you (advice does not count)? He always made too much Gritty Kitty to fit in the one cup, so he'd just give me a smaller cup with the rest of it in it :)
13. What is louder, Ed's blender or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? ROFL, definitely that blender!
14. Is Ed a tenor or a bass? I couldn't tell you :(
15. Who gives better advice... Ed or your favorite bartender? Ed.
16. How old do you think Ed was when he awoke to embrace the full meaning of his ED-ness? I don't know.

The original order of 100 posters has been distributed; each of the original posters were handsigned and numbered by the artist.

COPIES of the poster may be purchased at cost by going to The Print Shop on what used to be Gov. Tryon Rd - I think it's now South Front Street?

The posters can be purchased in the original large size or a smaller 8-1/2 x 14.

While we wish there were an unlimited supply of posters available, being a fund-raiser, we hope you understand the need to limit expenses.

Your purchase of posters from the Print Shop and your help distributing them would certainly be a large help to the cause and would be appreciated by all involved, not to mention being appreciated by Ed.

If there is anything that any of us can do then don't hesitate to tell us. New Bern deeply appreciates Ed, and I can speak for myself and my friends that we would do anything we could to help.
