Friends of Ferdinand's Blurbs |
About me:
Every FFI horse was rescued from slaughter. FFI adoption procedures and policies ensure, to the best of our ability, that an FFI horse is never in-danger of slaughter again. We strive to place every horse in a loving, caring and knowledgeable forever home.
In 1986, a thoroughbred named Ferdinand raced to victory at the historical and prestigious Kentucky Derby. One year later, Ferdinand won the Breeder's Cup and was also named Horse of the Year. He captivated the American Public and rekindled the dreams of horse racing internationally. During his career, Ferdinand earned $4 million dollars and was retired to stud in 1989. In 1995, Ferdinand, a king among thoroughbred racing, was exported to Japan, where he was led to slaughter.
Every year, almost 90,000 horses are slaughtered in the United States. In addition, many horses are shipped across borders for slaughters. After killed, flesh is shipped across seas for meat. The largest markets for horse meat include France, Belgium, Holland, Japan, and Italy. There are only three horse slaughter plants in the United States and they are all foreign owned.
Friends of Ferdinand is a non-profit organization that is run by volunteers, who are all dedicated to providing Indiana's racehorses (mainly thoroughbred, standardbred, and quarter horses) with a chance at life through second careers and a dignified retirement. Our goal is to foster and promote the humane treatment of Indiana's horses by educating individuals
