Facts:
1. Orphans and HIV/AIDS
According to United Nations estimates, every 14 seconds a child is orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. This means that over 6,000 children everyday join the over 14 million children worldwide who have been orphaned by this disease. Often these children do not have enough to eat, no clean water to drink, no access to proper medical care, they cannot attend school and grow up in an environment of fear and neglect.
2. Water
1.1 Billion people (18% of the world's population) lack access to safe drinking water. In a world of unprecedented wealth, almost 2 million children die each year due to a lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation. Access to clean water and sanitation can reduce the risk of a child dying by as much as 50%.
Water-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, taking the lives of 6,000 people a day, and are responsible for 80 percent of all sickness in the world. 40 billion hours are lost annually to hauling water, a chore primarily undertaken by women and girls.
3. Malaria
At least a million people die from malaria each year. Some put the estimates as high as 2.7 million.
90% of the deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa.
70% of the deaths are of children under 5.
That's equivalent to one child dying of malaria in Africa every 30 seconds.
Put another way, 7 jumbo jets full of children disappear because of malaria every day.
4. Child Exploitation
An estimated 2 million children worldwide -- some as young as 5 years old -- are enslaved in the global commercial sex trade. Many are forced, coerced or tricked into prostitution. “Child sex tourism,” the practice of traveling to another country for the purpose of having sex with children, exacerbates the commercial sex trade.
