Friends were formed in 1986 by singer/guitarist/songwriter William Jones, in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland, UK. Drummer and percussionist Martin Parker joined in 1992 and these two form the nucleus of the London-based band today. Friends have released nine albums (plus two compilations) and six singles on the Summerhouse label, all of which are still available. Their most recent studio album, Spangleland, was released in May 2007.
Stylistically the music is classic English romantic pop, with lyrics that range from incurable optimism to the darkest miserablism. Influences include Teardrop Explodes and The Chameleons, and 70s acoustic music such as Nick Drake and Renaissance. Their latest album sees the band stretching its stylistic range, with a couple more tilts at the perfect pop classic, and some lengthier epics that hover between immediate popness and downright weirdness.
Friends completely disown any television programmes of the same name.
Hello and many thanks so much for your comment! yeah already got your new album and enjoying it :D love your sounds for long years! thanks for your great, great music. Takashi.
Hi! Just wanted to say I bought Spangleland and listened to it while walking around Brooklyn on a warm Sunday last week. I'm amazed...my thought before was that it might barely hold a candle to the Friends songs that meant so much to me and soundtracked my life for years- but it might be my favorite yet! Beautiful!! The very perfection of perfect chill up the spine lovely and style wise ambitious pop. Cheers and thanks for everything!
Hope you are okay. Looking forward to the gig on the 12th. Thanks for accepting my friendship. It's my lone side project, poems, speeches, monologues put to sound effects cheers Carl
