Sounds Like
The vibe is retro/future/club/euro, combining the glitch and glitz of Goldfrapp with the allure of INXS and futurism of Gary Numan.
A colleague at work suggested this: NaSoAlMo - National Solo Album Month. The challenge is to write and record an entire album in the month of November. The fun part here is, there's no time to over-think it... Just write, and hit record.
I've said for years (half-joking) that I could pull a 'techno' project out of my ass if I wanted to. I figured it was finally time to put my music where my mouth is.
With time being so tight, I decided to keep it simple by writing and recording entirely on my Macintosh Powerbook using VST synthesizer plug-ins for Cubase SL3. The vocals are decidedly minimal and heavily processed.
In the past, my compositions have often come from venting over various frustrations. In contrast, these song themes are heavily inspired by sensual influences including the music of Bryan Ferry and Goldfrapp.
The result (while it has its obvious limitations) has exceeded my expectations. It's been quite a gratifying creative process. Ten new songs (including one cover) inside of a month. A different approach for myself, using lush synths in open arrangements over a bed of decadent beats with minimal vocals.
I completed the basic album at the end of November 2007, re-recorded the vocals in December, and mixed thru early 2008.
Limited three-song promo CDs are going out to industry contacts and other "cool" people. I am also working on video to accompany the project, and taking it live.
