bells ringing at the bottom of the ocean -
a lonely frog singing in a deciduous forest, it's winter -

My name is Jack Phoenix . . . I am a musician and writer . . Under another name, and in a previous life, I made recordings as a guest artist for Holistic, DC, FatCat & We Love You, as well as for my own label Zinc Stoat . . .
Here's Obeeb, a short film by Martha Moopette. I co-wrote and performed the music with Ergo Phizmiz. The hats featured are mainly from my own collection.
Recorded highlights include: three tracks (Bula, Ear Fluff, & Sweet Cakes) with Pnu Riff for Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 Worldwide Show (Holistic, 1998). I also co-wrote & performed on 4 tracks with O.H Krill on the album
The Krill Papers (DC Recordings, 2000). My album Call of the Wild (Zinc Stoat, 2000) featured Max Brennan, Ken Campbell and three of his dogs. I played soprano sax on the track Camel Spit for Stromba (FatCat, 2005) . .
I am a musician & a writer . . but I also like to make films . . & to paint pictures . . make installations . . take photographs . . . My interviews with Robert Anton Wilson, Derren Brown & Bryan Appleyard have been published in Fortean Times, a wonderful magazine devoted to strange phenomena . . I have also been published in The Wire (a memoir of my friendship with John Cage), & I used to regularly write reviews for Jazz - The Magazine . . (when it still existed) . .
My first interview - with cult comedian Ken Campbell - was published in Gneurosis . . I worked with Ken - writing music for his shows, editing and transcribing some of them for publication, & being a test audience for his jokes - for many years . .
I studied music at the University of Surrey, gaining the degree Bachelor of Music in 1987, and became a Master of Music in Analytical Musicology in 1989. I specialize in improvisation, composition and analysis, and my dissertation subjects were Thelonious Sphere Monk and Vic Hoyland. My main instruments are piano, oboe and soprano saxophone. I also studied percussion with the wonderful James Blades. As a composer I gained much from informal discussion and correspondence with John Cage, Susan Bradshaw, Ivor Cutler, and Vic Hoyland, as well as from my own analyses, performances and improvisations.
Here's Eric Dolphy's improvisation on 'God Bless the Child' - one of my favourite performances ever:
