Bio
Pardon the French, but From Tomorrow have made chicken salad out of chicken sh**. As we all know, the metal scene is all but littered with meager clones; limited in creativity and fashion sense. At first glance and potential initial listen, Spartanburg, South Carolina’s From Tomorrow does not display any obvious traits of deviating from said criticisms. On the contrary, after a few spins of this quintet’s debut release, The Fear of Forever, it becomes clear that From Tomorrow have taken those genre gripes and discarded them by crafting a rather impressive and enthralling first offering. Leaving not a second of time to spare, the casual listener is sure to notice the sheer urgency and menace of album opener “Marty McFly.” From Tomorrow takes their metallic brawn and supplements it with the desperation of post-hardcore and the intimidating dissonance of deathcore, as many segments of the material presented feature bottom heavy breakdowns and loose, frantic song structures. Take “The Corpses of Santa Clara” for instance. Unfurling with the varied, inspired vocals of Wyles, the remainder of From Tomorrow – Josh and James on strings, Matt on drums, and Trey on keys – generate a merciless sonic assault designed to rupture ear drums. The final minute of the piece even features a completely random electronic bit that serves merely as a distraction before collapsing into another spine bending breakdown. Even with the atmospheric washes that coat “Bill Brasky,” From Tomorrow seemingly have no problem adding that special “it” factor to a composition that upgrades a tune from a quality one to a repeated listen. Taking a step back and surveying the greater whole, The Fear of Forever plays very similarly to The Devil Wears Prada’s Plagues. Most songs break out in a hurry – built upon uncompromising riffs, ornamented with flourishes of keys and brief glimpses of melody – only to disintegrate into a brutal wall of sound. Both records utilize breakdowns incredibly well compared to most of their competitors who incorporate them just to re-mediate songwriting woes. Here, From Tomorrow justify their inclusion by having these down-tuned beat downs serve as punctuated blows; used to accentuate the music – not detract. While some will read the word “breakdown” and scramble for the exit to this window, let it be known that these five musicians refuse to limit themselves to the typical three minute stomp and romp bruising that serves as a majority of songs within their genre. Half of the tracks produced span durations of four minutes or longer. Two of these, “Al vs. Topanga” and “What’s That, a Swatch Watch?” expand even further. The first selection mentioned jars the listener with jagged riffs and a knuckle-whitening passage steeped in frantic shredding and inhuman growling. Following a dramatic build-up of double bass and driving strumming everything erupts into an enormous breakdown that was only hinted at a few minutes earlier. The second cut noted happens to be a little more atmospheric in nature, containing a memorable clean singing section only to rear a hideous face towards the conclusion; complete with off-kilter fret board runs and distressed howling. As “Amber Lamps” closes the festivities with arguably the group’s heaviest track, it is apparent that From Tomorrow have taken the genre’s major pitfalls and constructed a collection of songs without them that is capable of silencing many a critic. Sure, the breakdowns are very much a presence – but each one is tastefully placed. Yes, some melodic singing occurs – but these instances hardly blemish. While The Fear of Forever is not the revitalization the genre is so sorely crying out for, From Tomorrow deserve credit for trying to make a rebirth happen instead of simply wishing for one.
