I started making music in January 2006 with Nanoloop between classes. With no musical background outside of percussion, I end up bumbling through finding melodies and song structures. Since I started, I've moved to using PxTone in addition to Nanoloop 1.3 and 2.01. Very little post-production was put into these songs. Instead, I tried to make the best use of what was available. I then went on to use Renoise and ChucK to make bigger songs with (I guess) more production value. The 8bit/VGM ascetic was kept even after the move to bigger and fancier software.
So is college very worth the efforts its cracked up to be? I guess what I'm trying to say is the money you could potentially make later in life worth the strain and struggle in college?
