Why Photography
Photography for me is all about capturing the essence of the something. Whether it be a person, place, or object. I love the ability of the medium to transport you to another place entirely…whether at the side of your true love or to a magnificent festival half way around the world. There are many who remember their first camera or the first time they took a picture. What I remember are all the magazines and catalogs where I would close myself up in my room and pore over every image. I could see and imagine myself in the most compelling scenes and I woud attempt to discover every detail in an attempt to miss nothing. Inevitably I always would, though, beause upon second glance or second read, I would see something else entirely. Portraits are my favorite thing to capture. I believe it can allow us to see the essence of a person in that one moment when the true being is present..the best in us is unencumbered by self-doubt, insecurity, lack, anger, or simply the ordinary distractions of life. I love going into people’s homes and seeing old photos of generations past. I wonder, who were they really? Who and what did they love, dream about, pray about? My favorite thing to talk about is passion. What makes people happy, what and who do they desire to be most, what is it that they would do if they were paid a million dollars or a few pennies? Passion, that transformative balm, that makes us laugh, cry tears of joy, be thrilled at the privilege to be alive. What better a thing to capture in the moment?
