About me: "Kindness and compassion toward all living things is a mark of a civilized society. Conversely, cruelty, whether it is directed against human beings or against animals, is not the exclusive province of any one culture or community of people. Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bull fighting and rodeos are cut from the same fabric: violence. Only when we have become nonviolent toward all life will we have learned to live well ourselves." -Cesar Chavez
My name is Fuchsia. I'm 25, a writer by "profession", an activist by "hobby", and rocking the day job at Planned Parenthood. I have twothree four (and multiplying!) cats who mean the world to me. When I was little, my father told me that I had a twin sister who was given up for adoption... and I believed him for years. I haven't matched my socks in ten years, except for knee socks. I'm a little obsessed with knee socks.
I'm a vegan, a punk, an activist, a hippie, a geek, a free spirit, a tomboy who loves wearing skirts, a queer, an atheist with Buddhist, Catholic and pagan tendencies. I'm extremely shy, only a few topics actually get me to participate in conversations with strangers (animal rights and music to name two). I don't believe in defining myself but those are a few of the labels that people give me...
I take a lot of pictures. Most are of my cats. You can see my pictures here. (Correction: I used to take lots of pictures, until someone stole my camera! Working on getting a new one...)
I am a co-founder of Windy City Rescue, which is a companion animal rescue group based in the Logan Square and Humboldt Park neighborhoods of Chicago. Want a cat? We've probably got plenty! For more information, visit windycityrescue.org.
I'm involved with a lot of activist groups. To name a few, Animal Defense League, Bash Back! Chicago, Radical Cheerleaders of Chicago, Vegan Death Squad, DePaul's Activist Student Union... I'm kept pretty busy.
When not being radical (ha!), I love geeky things. I'll gladly get into an in-depth discussion about any aspect of Lord of the Rings, Firefly, or Harry Potter! (Or many other topics, but those are a few examples.)
I'm a country girl at heart, from the middle of nowhere in Massachusetts, but I've been living in Chicago since September 2007. Since I've been here, the way I see myself has been constantly changing, but I love it. It's easy to get comfortable in a small liberal town in Massachusetts where everyone has known you since you were an infant...
I do not add random bands or people that I've never heard of without a genuine, sincere message to go along with it.
Who I'd like to meet: Vegans and activists in Chicago (or in general). People who question things. People with a sense of adventure, whom I don't have to beg to go on rollercoasters or try a new food (unless you get motion sickness or are knowingly allergic, obviously). People with good taste in music (yes, we all like to listen to crappy music at times, but at least I know the difference). People who like to occassionally, when they have free time, sit down with a book and read. People who want to get out and see a world beyond the one they've always known. People who, above all, want to learn about living.
oh shit! i tried to do an overall goodbye thing but i didnt know i would get back so late and i assumed i would see you again :( you're so awesome and im so so happy that you came!
no I get my fear of dentists from getting cavities despite brushing and flossing and then enduring numerous needles being jabbed into my gums so I won't feel the dentist using power tools to drill bigger holes in my teeth.
Things are actually MUCH better! I was a HOT MESS indeedy for a bit!
How is Chi-town?? I def. want to visit. Of course I don't get any vacation time forever still...I am thinking about coming for Lollaplooza in August...Any interest in going? Perhaps I'll get there sooner though!
Court was pointless. They offered us a deal to drop the charge down to disorderly conduct and John and I told them where they could stick that deal. So we have another date on April 10th so the city can try and bring the cop in. We will see.
