   Fuck Weingarten's Blurbs
About me:
I am River Oaks Theatre. I am Alabama Theatre. I'm Tower Theatre. Hell, I'm Maceba Theatre. I am the ghost of every theatre, church, community center, rec hall, small business, cool looking gas station, every house that dared have an ox-bow window, slave graveyards moved to make room for townhouses, the Jefferson Davis Hospital ghosts that now roam the Federal Reserve, Astroworld, homeless people made illegal aliens by city ordinances, undocumented workers riding cramped in the cab of unairconditioned trucks, the "Harold Farb" ghettos of southwest Houston, Montrose when it used to be risky to live there, art festivals not sponsored by Budweiser, people who show their pride by adorning their cars in ways that the manufacturer advised against...in Houston, Texas..
Who I'd like to meet:
People that appreciate history. People who got priced out of the Montrose. And the Heights. People who've lived inside the loop for generations. People who know the difference between China Town and Viet town. People who go out of their way to shop at independent book and record stores. People who see culture clash as a positive thing. People who remember when Gessner was "way, way out there".

WEINGARTEN REALTY has refused to renew the lease for Tien Ren restaurant, corner Westheimer and Hillcroft, after being in business in the same location for 18 years. It started life as the Wonderful Vegetarian Restaurant, and when it changed owners 10 years ago, it got renamed to Tien Ren. W.R. offered the restaurant a lease at another location, but for more money than they thought they could afford, so they have decided to close their doors. This place has been an institution for Houston's vegetarian community and will be sorely missed. If you've never been there and tried their all-vegan buffet, I swear, you don't know how great tasting vegan food can be. Better hurry, though, tomorrow is their last day open.

I want to wish the Tien Ren folks the best of luck, and I hope they are able to re-open somewhere else soon. And to Weingarten, a hearty FUCK YOU.

Interesting... I went to check that HPD link and I got the ol' "This account has been deleted" page.

My only guess is that there was a little too much truth involved. I can only imagine the boys in blue are up to old tricks.

The badge still means you suck.

I lived in Montrose for about 15 years. I consider myself a true "Montrovian". My first experience in Montrose was seeing "Rocky Horror" at the Alabama Theater when I was 13! I was never the same after that. I went to Univ. Of St Thomas. I remember the Westheimer Arts Festival as well as all the others. Marini's Empenadas, Charlie's, shopping the curve, seeing movies like Toxic Avenger at the River Oaks theater and then haging out at Marfreless. I worked at Zimm's (the original one), Emo's, The Ale House and a few other bars that are (were) institutions in Montrose - Hell, in Texas! I was an Urban Animal and didn't even own a car for years because I skated everywhere. I remember when you mentioned Montrose you thought about art, diversity, character a place where you were free to be whoever/whatever you wanted to be and nobody there judged you because that's not what it was about.
And then I remember seeing the first SDT (single dwelling townhome) and that's when it all started disappearing. All the character. Everything that made Montrose one of the most special places in Houston slowly began to be eaten away by the Suburban virus. The "Real" began being replaced by the "plastic" - strip malls, SUV's and plastic people. They even changed the name - Midtown. Houston sold its soul and its character for a another fucking suburb. Houston: brought to you by Lego, stolen from you by Weingartens.
