The Fugees exploded onto the music scene in the mid-1990s and from their ascent changed hip-hop forever. Formed in northern New Jersey by vocalists Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, the multi-talented trio offered a brilliant eclecticism of hip-hop, reggae, R&B, soul and doo wop which captivated audiences worldwide. Their intelligent and socially conscious lyrical style meanwhile brought matters of urgent concern to the foreground of pop music. In 1996, The Fugees released their critically acclaimed album The Score – a landmark achievement for the hip-hop community – which included such hits as the Haitian-dedicated reworking of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” and Lauryn Hill’s Grammy Award-winning take on Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” The record won a Grammy for Rap Album of the Year, and went on to become one of the best selling hip-hop albums of all time.
