About me:
Full moon bike rides Geelong is a concept plagurised from a group of Melbourne & Sydney cyclists adapted to the Geelong City and surf coast areas. Although a local historian, Rod Charles sprukes that this is nothing new. In fact 100years late. In the late 1800's a popular social event was riding 'velocopedes' during full moon lit evenings.
Our rides are aimed at newcomers to cycling, offering the experience of riding a bike in the company of experienced cyclists. This is so punctures, gear changing and other bike stuff, is so much easier to deal with.
Because the rides are held in the evening and visit interesting areas, they are enjoyed by experienced riders as well.
What is particularly attractive is the leisurely pace & social aspect of the rides. They always end or travel through 'nice' areas and you can't help but meet new people.
Food is held in high esteem at full moon rides because eating in itself is a social event and to power your bike you need food.
All riders are therefore encouraged to provide food for themselves and to share with others. Some people are vegetarian or vegan so it is an opportunity to try foods not normally eaten.
Alcoholic drinks are not actively encouraged to respect all people riding. Although in moderation fine wine or a cool beer can make a perfect accompanyment to food.
What seems particularly popular is the sharing of food. So bring a small plate or container of whatever to share with others - lollies, biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit, nuts, fresh fruit, bag of chips, etc, etc.
Full moon rides have travelled to:
the You Yangs, Queenscliff, Lara Wetlands, Drysdale rail station and return, Barwon River, Waurn Ponds Creek trail, Fyansford.
it is hoped that Full moon rides in Geelong will be held 'once per season'.
The Full Moon Rides cost nothing and yet offer, return transport, basic food staples provided and other benefits. This is because the rides are simple and there is an assumption of everyone pitching in to help with supply of food to share and occasionally transport if needed.
